United Kingdom – British Airways last month opened applications for the fourth consecutive year of its fully-funded Speedbird Pilot Academy, committing GBP 18 million (approx. USD $22.7 million) to fund up to 160 places on the program, covering the full GBP 100,000 (approx. USD $126,000) cost of pilot training over two years with a guaranteed flying role on completion.
- The program has attracted more than 25,000 applicants in previous years; to date, nearly 50 pilots have graduated through the Speedbird Pilot Academy and are now flying for British Airways.
- New research commissioned alongside the launch indicates that 24% of UK adults would have considered a pilot career if training had been fully funded, while 87% of UK adults have never heard of fully-funded pilot training programmes — underlining what the airline identifies as significant untapped talent across all socioeconomic backgrounds.

- "The Speedbird Pilot Academy is an investment not just in British Airways, but in the future of UK aviation. We want the very best talent out there for our future generation of pilots; by removing the costs, we're opening the opportunity up to more people and making a flying career more accessible to all," said Sean Doyle, Chairman and Chief Executive, British Airways.
- "We're incredibly proud to open our doors once again to people who may never have believed a career as a pilot was within reach. The response to the Speedbird Pilot Academy in previous years has been extraordinary, and the calibre of applicants shows just how much talent is out there, talent that simply needs the opportunity. By launching the program this year, we're investing not only in individuals but in the long-term future of British Airways and UK aviation," said Simon Cheadle, Director of Flight Operations, British Airways.
