Acron Aviation’s SafeRoute+™: ADS-B In Solution Boosts Safety, Saves Fuel, Says FAA Study

14th May 2025

St Petersburg, Florida, USA Following compelling FAA findings from an Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) In operational evaluation at Dallas Fort Worth Airport (DFW) , Acron Aviation is showcasing its proven SafeRoute+™ retrofit ADS-B In solution at *2025 AEEC | AMC event in Seattle this week. This cutting-edge upgrade enhances flight safety, cuts fuel burn, and streamlines operations, without the need for costly hardware overhauls.

The National Airspace System faces increasing pressure to improve operational and environmental efficiency. SafeRoute+ offers airlines a powerful, proven upgrade. Installed as a software enhancement to existing T3CAS® or TCAS 3000SP™ systems, it integrates smoothly with standard cockpit interfaces and adds advanced display options via the new ADS-B Guidance Display (AGD).

“SafeRoute+ gives pilots a real-time, forward-looking view of traffic up to 180 nautical miles out,” said Chris Polynin, Director of Product Development at Acron Aviation. “It’s a major leap in both safety and efficiency.”

Four smart tools, for one seamless upgrade

SafeRoute+ includes a suite of certified ADS-B In applications:

  • Enhanced Airborne Traffic Awareness (AIRB): Displays position, speed, and direction of nearby aircraft for better visual tracking and improved situational awareness.
  • Interval Management Spacing (IMS): Increases precision of enroute spacing, resulting in less vectoring, less fuel burn and less emissions, all while increasing airspace capacity.
  • CDTI-Assisted Visual Separation (CAVS/CAS): Enables optimum arrival spacing for higher runway throughput, even in reduced visibility conditions.
  • In-Trail Procedures (ITP): Allows oceanic aircraft to make beneficial altitude changes, which save fuel and reduce emissions.

Results in the real world

In a recent FAA evaluation with American Airlines’ A321 fleet at Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), SafeRoute+ operations delivered impressive results:

  • 0.6 NM and 20-second average reduction in flight distance and time during arrival.
  • 12-second reduction between arrivals, adding four to five extra landings per runway, per hour.
  • Significant fuel and emissions savings.
  • Pilots reported significant boost in situational awareness, thanks to the intuitive traffic displays and improved collaboration with air traffic control.

“If all American Airlines’ A321 arrivals into DFW had conducted CAS operations, the total projected benefit during the evaluation would have been approximately 15 million lbs of fuel savings, valued at $9.7 million, and a reduction of 22k tons of CO2 just at DFW!” – FAA Benefit Report.

SafeRoute+ is available for commercial airline retrofit programs, offering a fast track to safer, more efficient operations without major avionics changes.

Acron Aviation is a key technology partner in the FAA’s NextGen initiative, which leverages innovative tools to modernize the US air space system. Through its ACSS joint venture with Thales, Acron Aviation is driving innovation that makes air travel safer and more efficient, helping airlines keep pace with the growing demands of modern airspace.

*Acron Aviation will be at the AMC | AEEC conference in Seattle next week, where Cam Morast, ACSS Product Manager will join a panel discussion sharing insights from the recent trial with American Airlines, highlighting how Acron Aviation’s ADS-B In solution delivered measurable improvements in operational efficiency, airspace management, and flight safety.

ABOUT FAA AIRS TRIAL AND NEXTGEN INITIATIVE
ACSS SafeRoute+ was a key technology in the FAA’s AIRS (ADS-B In Retrofit Spacing) trial, part of the broader NextGen initiative to modernize air traffic control. As the primary technology provider, ACSS demonstrated the operational feasibility and significant benefits of ADS-B In applications, specifically Cockpit Display of Traffic Information Assisted Separation (CAS) and Interval Management (IM), through its SafeRoute+ system. The trial, conducted at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (DFW), showcased how advanced in-cockpit displays and data sharing can enhance pilot situational awareness and enable accurate aircraft spacing.
