African Safety Board Recommends Fleet Renewal and Flight Simulator Investment as well as Training After 2025 Helicopter Crash

November 12, 2025

Ghana – Captain Paul Forjoe, retired pilot and senior aviation engineer with the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB), has presented a series of critical safety recommendations following the conclusion of the investigation into the fatal Ghana Air Force helicopter crash.

  • Addressing the findings at the official report presentation, Captain Forjoe stated that the board’s recommendations focus on fleet modernization, enhanced pilot training, and improved aviation infrastructure to strengthen operational safety and prevent similar tragedies.
  • The investigative board urged the Ghana Air Force to acquire modern aircraft equipped with terrain avoidance warning systems (TAWS), advanced navigation suites, and audio-visual cockpit voice and flight data recorders (CVR/FDR) to ensure better situational awareness and post-incident analysis.
  • Forjoe emphasized the need for the Air Force to invest in flight simulators to support recurrent pilot training, improve proficiency, and enable more effective emergency scenario preparation.
  • Additional recommendations included contracting certified aviation weather service providers and developing en route navigational aids across remote areas to mitigate the operational risks of flying in regions with limited ground-based infrastructure.
  • The board also advised the establishment of flight data monitoring (FDM) and real-time aircraft tracking systems to enhance oversight and response capabilities during flight operations.
