India – Air India Flying Academy (AIFA), the airline’s ab-initio flight training operation being developed at Amravati Airport in Maharashtra, has received Combined Airworthiness Organisation (CAR-CAO) approval from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for maintenance and continuing airworthiness activity covering its training fleet. The approval establishes an in-house regulatory framework for maintaining aircraft availability and airworthiness as Air India progresses toward operational flight training at the 34-aircraft flight training academy.
- The approval became effective on 5 August 2026 under reference IND.CAR-CAO.000029 - the stated scope covers the Piper PA-28-181 and Diamond DA42 training aircraft based at the Amravati facility.
- Air India currently lists a fleet of 34 trainer aircraft at AIFA, comprising 31 single-engine Piper Archers and three multi-engine Diamond DA42 NG aircraft. The academy also lists three fixed-base simulation devices: two single-engine Frasca FSTDs and one multi-engine Diamond FSTD.
- AIFTA’s Amravati campus covers approximately 10 acres and includes its own maintenance hangar, dispatch centre, classrooms, briefing rooms and residential facilities. Air India states that the campus is designed to accommodate up to 180 cadets simultaneously.
- Air India’s published training syllabus provides for 200 flight hours, comprising 185 single-engine and 15 multi-engine hours, within an estimated 18-month CPL training programme. The wider cadet pathway, including ground school, licence processing, ATPL ground school and type rating, is planned at approximately 26 months.
