Aircraft Manufacturer Revises Narrowbody Type Output Plans, Eyes December 2026 for Full Production Rate

November 2, 2025

Global – According to media reporting Airbus is said to be facing further delays in ramping up production of its A220 aircraft, pushing back the timeline to achieve a key production milestone due to continued supply chain disruptions. The European manufacturer now expects to reach its target of producing 14 A220 jets per month only by the final weeks of 2026, media reported citing industry sources.

  • An internal interim target has been set at 12 aircraft per month by mid-2026, up from the current rate of 7–8 per month.
  • Factories in Mirabel, Quebec (Canada) and Mobile, Alabama (USA), are experiencing shortages in critical components—including engines and wings—complicating production efforts.
  • Approximately 10 aircraft have been removed from the 2025–2026 production schedule due to these delays.
  • The A220 programme remains unprofitable; Airbus acquired a majority stake in 2018 from Bombardier, with the Quebec government retaining 25%. The province recently wrote down CAD 400 million from its stake in the program.
  • Airbus is implementing short-term mitigations to protect delivery volumes, including:
  • Reallocating Quebec-based staff from assembly to aircraft delivery processes.
  • Aiming to deliver 100 A220 aircraft in 2025, a one-third increase from the 2024 forecast.
  • Airbus delivered 62 A220s in the first nine months of 2025, although it does not disclose per-model full-year targets.
  • The supply chain bottleneck includes ongoing delays in wing deliveries from a Spirit Aero Systems facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Airbus is set to assume control of this operation in a joint rescue arrangement with Boeing.
