Asian Flag Carrier to Add 2 FFS in 2026 – Boosts Capacity Through Efficiency Initiative

November 6, 2025

Hong Kong- Cathay Pacific has achieved a significant leap in flight training efficiency, unlocking thousands of additional simulator hours through a major digitisation and reliability enhancement project at its Flight Training Centre. The initiative, led by Sam Manifold, Deputy Flying Training Manager (Airbus), reflects Cathay Pacific’s ongoing investment in technology-driven operational training excellence.

  • The Cathay Pacific Flight Training Centre currently operates over 30 training devices, including 12 full-flight simulators (FFS) running around the clock, with two additional simulators set to go online in January 2026.
  • The recent innovation program — developed by Manifold and a cross-functional team of more than 40 pilots and engineers — focused on eliminating inefficiencies, reducing simulator downtime, and boosting training throughput.
  • By replacing paper-based reporting with digital tablets, the team streamlined training and maintenance workflows, while the introduction of an electronic tech log (e-tech log) for recording simulator errors sharply reduced reset times and improved software reliability.
  • The system upgrade also included a revamp of Cathay’s legacy tracking platform, now capable of real-time fault analysis, trend monitoring, and faster repair dispatch — all contributing to improved simulator uptime and reduced disruption during training.
  • These advancements generated 8,000 additional minutes of simulator availability in just seven months — equivalent to hundreds of extra pilot training sessions without expanding physical infrastructure.
