Australia – The Australian Government has announced two senior leadership appointments at the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA): the reappointment of Pip Spence as CEO and Director of Aviation Safety for a further two years through to May 2028, and the appointment of Greg Hughes to the CASA Board for a three-year term.
- Spence, who has served as CASA's CEO and Director of Aviation Safety since 2021 — the first woman to hold the position — has been credited with strengthening the regulator's organizational capability, improving service responsiveness, and fostering a culture of accountability across government, industry, and international partnerships. Her reappointment is intended to ensure continuity of leadership as CASA progresses significant regulatory reforms and continues to position itself as a forward-looking aviation safety regulator.
- Hughes brings decades of senior leadership experience in aviation and transport, including executive roles at Cathay Pacific where he served as Executive Director, Chief Operations and Services Delivery Officer, and Senior Advisor. Most recently, he has been providing advisory services with Oliver Wyman. His appointment is expected to strengthen CASA's board-level expertise in operations, governance, and strategic oversight across complex, safety-critical environments.
CASA is responsible for setting and regulating standards covering maintenance, airspace, aerodromes, licensing, and all types of aviation operations in Australia.
