Boeing Hosts 30 Aviation Insurance Executives in Miami to Discuss CBTA Pilot Training

October 18, 2026

Florida, USA – US aerospace manufacturer Boeing hosted aviation insurance executives, including representatives of global insurance broker Marsh, at its Miami training campus on September 30, 2026, for discussions on Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA). The engagement focused on the potential for competency-based pilot training to support airline risk mitigation, improve operational safety and provide measurable information for aviation insurers.

  • A total of 30 senior aviation insurance professionals attended the Boeing-hosted session, according to Brian Glod, Global Head of Aviation & Space at Marsh. The event provided insurance industry representatives with an opportunity to examine Boeing's CBTA approach and its application to airline pilot training.
  • Christine Bohl, Commercial Training Market Director at Boeing, indicated that the discussions generated ideas for further developing CBTA programs and exploring collaboration with the aviation insurance sector. Both organizations expressed interest in continuing their engagement on training-related safety improvements.
  • Boeing has been developing and implementing its CBTA training framework since 2019, moving beyond traditional task-based training toward assessments of pilot competencies and operational performance. The company positions the approach as a means of identifying training requirements associated with airline operational risks.
  • Boeing has also outlined opportunities for airlines to seek insurer-supported funding for safety enhancement programs. Its guidance identifies competency assessments, training performance measurements and operational safety data as potential evidence supporting applications for insurance-related training funding.
  • AFM previously reported that Boeing and Cathay Pacific hosted a three-day CBTA/EBT conference from September 16–18, 2026, attended by representatives from more than 20 airlines. That event focused on implementing Boeing's Total System Approach and using operational evidence to develop airline recurrent training programs.
  • Boeing's Total System Approach integrates CBTA, Evidence-Based Training (EBT), Safety Data Analytics (SDA) and competency mapping. The framework uses operational and training data to identify areas requiring improvement, develop targeted simulator scenarios and monitor pilot competencies, including flight path management, situational awareness, communication, workload management and decision-making.
