Boeing's 20-Year Aviation Workforce Forecast Highlights 119,000 New Pilot Demand

April 22, 2026

USA – Boeing has projected that North America will require approximately 435,000 new aviation professionals and nearly USD 970 billion in aviation services through 2044, with the pilot training segment alone requiring approximately 119,000 new pilots over the 20-year period — underscoring the scale of the training pipeline challenge facing the region's airlines, flight schools, and simulator training centres.

  • Boeing's projections, aligned with its 2025 Pilot and Technician Outlook and 2025 Services Market Outlook, break the workforce demand into three categories: approximately 119,000 pilots, 123,000 maintenance technicians, and 193,000 cabin crew through 2044.
  • The North American aviation services market is forecast at approximately USD 970 billion over the period, with a 20-year compound growth rate of approximately 2.7% across maintenance, modifications, digital solutions, and training.
  • Fleet expansion and modernisation are the primary drivers, with growth concentrated in single-aisle aircraft renewals and network densification driving pilot and cabin crew hiring, while increased cargo and e-commerce activity supports freighter demand and MRO workload.
