California Aeronautical University Instructor Named “Educator of the Year” by Aviation Technician Education Council
USA – California Aeronautical University (CAU) proudly announces that Omar Aguilera, instructor in the University’s Aviation Maintenance Technology program, has been named “Educator of the Year” by the Aviation Technician Education Council (ATEC). This prestigious award recognizes Aguilera’s outstanding contributions to aviation maintenance education and his commitment to shaping the next generation of aircraft mechanics.
A 25-year veteran of the United States Navy, Aguilera spent much of his career working on helicopters and mentoring young Sailors. Guided by the medical profession model “see one, be one, teach one,” Aguilera teaches his students the importance of critical thinking and troubleshooting, skills needed to meet the future needs of aviation and aerospace industries.
“My goal is to give back to the industry that I learned to love throughout my career in the military,” said Aguilera. “One of the most important lessons my mentors instilled in me was the art of troubleshooting. Anyone can change a part but understanding why you’re making that change is what makes a proficient and autonomous technician. That’s the approach I work to instill in my students every day.”
His experience and passion for giving back to the industry have made him an integral member of CAU’s maintenance program and an invaluable asset to students.
“Omar has had a great military career training sailors,” said California Aeronautical University Provost Dr. Michael Berry. “Now he is making a lasting impact on the future of aviation maintenance, leading general aviation technicians to their careers. He provides his students a solid foundation that will prepare them for the time they reach the work world!”
The University’s maintenance program offers hands-on, career-oriented training that prepares students with practical skills used on the job. Graduates have been employed by Northrop Grumman, the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, GE, and other aviation-focused organizations.
With membership made up of aviation employers, vendors, and FAA Part 147 schools offering maintenance technician programs, ATEC’s mission is to promote and support aviation maintenance technician education, with the goal of enabling the aerospace community to meet its workforce needs.
Aguilera will be honored at ATEC’s Annual Conference in Norfolk, Virginia this March 2025, where he’ll also deliver a breakout session discussing innovative approaches to challenging concepts in airframe and powerplant education.
