Colorado, US University Launches Simulator-based Flight Training to Expand Aviation Access in 2025

October 22, 2025

Colorado, USA – CMU Tech, the technical and vocational training arm of Colorado Mesa University, has launched a new flight simulation course targeting aspiring aviators of all ages and backgrounds, with a specific focus on encouraging greater female participation in aviation. The program offers an affordable, simulator-based introduction to aviation, addressing the need for accessible pilot training solutions in Western Colorado.

  • The course utilises Garmin flight simulation systems, enabling students to train with technology reflective of modern aircraft avionics at a fraction of the cost of in-aircraft flight time.
  • Students work with tools such as the GTN Trainer and Garmin's multi-functional displays to simulate real-world flying scenarios, route planning, and aircraft control tasks.
  • The course supports diverse learning paths—from youth aged 14 who may solo fly by 16, to retired individuals exploring aviation as a new interest.
  • With simulator-based training costing significantly less than conventional aircraft-based instruction (estimated at $70–$140/hour), CMU Tech’s offering could serve as a replicable model for other educational institutions seeking to expand entry-level pilot training access.
