Egnatia Aviation Expands European Aviation Research Partnerships

Greece & France – Greek pilot training organisation Egnatia Aviation has participated in a DEMOQUAS research consortium meeting hosted by Safran in Paris while advancing plans to accommodate a regional office of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas at Lydia Aerodrome.

• DEMOQUAS is a Euro 2.66 million Horizon Europe research project running from May 1, 2024, to April 30, 2027. It is coordinated by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and lists eight funded participants, including Egnatia Aviation, Safran and Delft University of Technology.
• Egnatia stated that its team participated in the project’s fourth consortium meeting at Safran’s facilities in Paris.
• The DEMOQUAS project is developing uncertainty-quantification methods and aircraft and engine design tools covering design, manufacturing and operational phases. Its research includes six industry test cases and is intended to support risk assessment, virtual certification and decision-making for emerging propulsion technologies.
• Research areas include multi-fidelity modelling, digital threads, digital twins and model-based systems engineering. One published project deliverable addresses safety-risk requirements involving component malfunctions, airport operations and pilot-related occurrences.
• The European Commission’s project register assigns Euro 159,375 in project costs and EU funding to Egnatia Aviation. Safran’s participation is valued at Euro 377,781, while the consortium is coordinated by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
• Egnatia also hosted CERTH Chairman Evangelos Bekiaris and Hellenic Institute of Transport Director Vasileios Kappatos at Lydia Aerodrome. Their visit followed the establishment of CERTH’s first regional office in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace within Egnatia’s campus.
• The regional office has formally operated from Lydia Aerodrome since March 24, 2026, with Egnatia providing dedicated workspace. Initial cooperation is expected to involve CERTH’s transport institute and Egnatia’s aircraft maintenance operation, creating potential applications in sustainable mobility, maintenance and airport technology.
• CERTH comprises five research institutes and a central directorate. Its activities cover transport, information technology, energy, biosciences and applied research, with Bekiaris serving as Chairman and Director of the Central Directorate.
• Egnatia described the work as part of a longer-term plan to develop Lydia Aerodrome into an aviation research and innovation hub connecting education, industry and research.
