First Long-HaulSimulatorBoeing 787-9fortheViennaLocation.New CAE 7000XR Full FlightSimulator(FFS)inOperation Since January 2025.More Efficient Deployment PlanningforAustrian Airlines Cockpit Crews.**
Vienna, Austria–Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT) officially put a Boeing 787-9 (Dreamliner) Full FlightSimulator(FFS)into operationinViennaon January 30, 2025, thus complementing thesimulatorfleet with a first long-haul modelatthislocation. Thisexpands the Lufthansa Group’s training organization’s offering of state-of-the-artsimulatorsinAustria and strengthens pilot trainingforAustrian Airlines with thelatestsimulatortechnology.
The 787-9simulatorfrom CAE’s 7000XR series meets the highest certification standards (Level-D) and enables realistic training thatcan simulate all flight conditions of the Boeing 787-9. Planningforthe newsimulatorbeganinmid-2023inclose collaboration betweenLATand Austrian Airlines.Inthe fall of 2023, the selection of a suitable manufacturer began. After several weeks of evaluation, the choice fell on the Canadiansimulatormanufacturer CAE. Subsequently, specific requirements were developedincooperation with Austrian and implemented with CAE. An acceptance of the FFS took place together with technicians fromLATand a pilot from Austrian AirlinesinJuly 2024 on-siteinthe assembly hallsinMontreal.InstallationinVienna, extensive testing phases, and final acceptance by the ACG were carried out from September to December 2024.
Thesimulatorwas presentedatan opening ceremonyatthe training center on January 30, 2025,attended byinvited guests and officiallyinaugurated byLATManaging Director Matthias Spohr and Austrian Airlines COO Francesco Sciortino.Inaddition to Austrian Airlines, otherLATcustomers were also among the participants.

Since June 2024, twoDreamliners have alreadybeen part of Austrian Airlines’ long-haul fleet. By the end of 2028, nine more Boeing 787-9s will gradually replace the current long-haul jets of types 777 and 767. The newly operationalsimulatoralso allowsforreduced travel timesforAustrian’s cockpit crews andincreased efficiencyindeployment planning.

Thishelps us both with theinitial training on our newest long-haul modelinthe fleet and subsequently with the regular, mandatory training sessions.Inthe medium term, thiswill also significantly reduce our training costs.”
