European Low-Cost Airline Defers Close to 90 Airbus Deliveries to Balance Growth and Profitability

November 11, 2025

Hungary – European low-cost carrier Wizz Air has announced a significant restructuring of its Airbus orderbook, agreeing with the manufacturer to defer 88 A320neo family aircraft deliveries and convert 36 A321XLR commitments into standard A321neos. The move represents a strategic recalibration of Wizz Air’s fleet and growth plans amid ongoing operational and cost challenges.

  • Under the revised agreement, 88 A320neo family aircraft originally due by fiscal year 2030 will now be delivered by FY2033, aligning Wizz Air’s expansion with a “more sustainable and profitable capacity growth trajectory.”
  • The airline’s total Airbus orderbook remains unchanged at 273 aircraft, but the composition and delivery timeline reflect a shift toward stabilizing growth and addressing supply chain and maintenance constraints.
  • Wizz Air will limit its annual capacity expansion to 10–12% through the late 2020s—down from previous surges of 15–20%—as it focuses on profitability and operational reliability.
  • The carrier’s commitment to the A321XLR has been reduced from 47 to 11 units, five of which have already been delivered. The remaining 36 orders have been converted to A321neos, a type of which Wizz Air already operates 94 aircraft.
  • The decision coincides with the closure of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi and the Vienna base, both of which were intended to utilize the A321XLR for extended-range leisure and VFR routes.

Wizz Air’s leadership cited ongoing pressures from Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues, which have grounded part of its fleet since 2023 and will continue to impact operations until late 2026. The airline expects these adjustments to provide financial breathing room while maintaining fleet modernization goals.

Statements

  • “High fuel prices, crew costs, and soft demand for premium-light long-haul proved insurmountable for Wizz Air. We learned that ultra-long-haul on narrowbodies is a niche too far for our cost base,” said Josef Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air.

About Wizz Air Wizz Air, headquartered in Budapest, Hungary, is one of Europe’s largest ultra-low-cost carriers, operating over 200 aircraft across a network of more than 200 destinations in 50 countries.
