In this week’s AFM Pilot Training Leadership Interview Series we speak with Ryan van Wijk, CEO at Alt Academy - a South African ATO delivering world-class pilot training and advanced simulation solutions operating a full flight simulator training center, flight school and cabin crew training facility. The conversation covers:
- Leadership & Origins: Ryan van Wijk shared his transition from a 20+ year airline career into entrepreneurship following the liquidation of Comair. Out of this disruption, he acquired and rebuilt key assets to form Alt Academy, with a clear mission to support aviation safety, skills development, and long-term industry sustainability.
- Comprehensive Aviation Training Portfolio: Alt Academy provides a wide range of training solutions, including full-flight simulator training offerings on B737 and A320, abinitio flight training courses, cabin crew training, aviation security, and ground handling.
- Strategic Partnerships & Global Expansion: A key milestone discussed was the introduction of the A320neo full-flight simulator and an exclusive partnership with Global Airways. Ryan also highlighted Alt Academy’s expansion into Europe through the establishment of an EASA ATO in Lithuania, strengthening its global training footprint.
- Pilot Shortage & Responsible Talent Pipelines: Ryan noted a growing shortage of pilots and engineers, particularly across Africa, driven by funding barriers and gaps in early aviation exposure. He stressed the importance of building responsible, quality-driven training pipelines that focus on mentorship, real operational experience, and long-term employability rather than volume alone.
- Future of Aviation Training: Looking ahead, Ryan expects aviation training to evolve through new technologies, bridging programs, and closer alignment with airline operations. While innovation will accelerate, he believes full-flight simulators, strong instructors, and ethical training models will remain essential to maintaining safety and standards.
