India – Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has marked a key milestone in India’s indigenous pilot training capability with the first flight of the HTT-40 Series Production aircraft (TH 4001) on October 24, 2025, from its Bengaluru facility.
The HTT-40 is a fully aerobatic, tandem-seat turboprop trainer designed for ab-initio training of Indian Armed Forces pilots.
Built in-house by HAL, the trainer is equipped for basic flight training, aerobatics, night and instrument flying, and features a modern cockpit, zero-zero ejection seats, and quick changeover capability between sorties.
The aircraft achieves a top speed of 450 km/h and a service ceiling of 6,000 meters, and is certified to FAR-23 standards.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) previously signed a contract with HAL for 70 HTT-40 units, with induction set between September 2025 and March 2030.
A Full Mission Simulator (FMS) is also part of the procurement package to enhance ground-based pilot preparation and mission profile training.
The aircraft supports India’s broader “AatmaNirbhar Bharat” initiative, emphasizing indigenous aerospace manufacturing and reducing dependency on imports.
