Florida, USA – Officials at North Perry Airport (KHWO) have pledged to address growing public concerns following a series of general aviation accidents linked to aircraft departing from the airport — one of Florida’s busiest flight training hubs. Broward County aviation leaders say a comprehensive safety assessment and community engagement plan is now underway to restore confidence and improve understanding of airport operations.
- At a press briefing, Michael Nonnemacher, Chief Operating Officer of the Broward County Aviation Department, acknowledged the community’s apprehension: “We are concerned about the perception of North Perry Airport in the eyes of the residents. It’s getting this negative stereotype.”
- Local records compiled by the City of Pembroke Pines list 42 incidents over the past five years, ranging from mechanical failures to fatal crashes in nearby neighborhoods.
- City officials, led by Mayor Angelo Castillo, have questioned whether the airport’s training intensity — averaging one takeoff or landing every minute — is sustainable in a densely populated urban area.
- In response, Broward County will commission a formal safety study, engaging residents, flight schools, pilots, mechanics, and business owners to evaluate operational risks and safety procedures.
- Built in 1943 as a U.S. Navy training field, North Perry Airport now primarily serves flight training operations, hosting multiple FAA Part 141 schools including Wayman College of Aeronautics, one of the largest aviation academies in South Florida.
- Wayman Eduardo, son of the academy’s founder, emphasized that safety remains the cornerstone of all training programs, saying: “It is day one. Safety is fundamental to becoming a pilot.”
- Wayman College organizes regular “Airport Days” to foster transparency between aviation stakeholders and local residents. The next event, scheduled for November 8, will offer the public opportunities to meet students, instructors, and airport personnel.
- Airport officials hope these outreach initiatives will demystify flight training operations, improve communication, and reduce misconceptions about safety practices at the facility.
