Former IATA Director General Willie Walsh Starts IndiGo CEO Role to Lead Expansion

India – Willie Walsh, former Director General of IATA and former CEO of British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG), has formally assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer at IndiGo, India's largest airline, on 3 August 2026, succeeding Managing Director Rahul Bhatia who served as interim CEO following Pieter Elbers' March 2026 resignation.

• Walsh formally assumed the CEO role on 3 August 2026, having concluded his tenure as IATA Director General on 31 July 2026.
• Walsh will lead IndiGo's overall management and strategic direction, with a focus on accelerating global growth, strengthening operational performance, expanding the network, sharpening commercial strategy, and improving customer experience.
• Walsh began his career as a pilot at Aer Lingus, progressing through Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer roles at the Irish carrier before leading British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and IAG from 2011 to 2020.
• His time at IATA centered on industry recovery following COVID-19, promoting sustainable aviation fuel policies, and preparing the sector for growth in a post-pandemic environment.
• Walsh's appointment comes as IndiGo continues to expand its international network and induct wide-body aircraft to strengthen its long-haul operations while retaining its leadership in the domestic market.
