Growing Need for Helicopter Pilots Discussed at Ontario, Canada 2025 Aviation Event

November 24, 2025

Canada – Great Lakes Helicopter Corp. (GLHC), a Cambridge-based helicopter flight school and commercial operator, hosted an open house at its facility near the Region of Waterloo International Airport, offering attendees hands-on exposure to rotary-wing aircraft and generating new interest in helicopter pilot training.

  • GLHC provides training for private and commercial helicopter licences and operates across multiple sectors, including agricultural spraying, utility work, charter flights, tourism, and news-gathering operations across Canada.
  • The school reports consistently strong interest from prospective students of all ages and career backgrounds, with many initially inspired by exposure to Ornge air ambulance operations.
  • GLHC’s commercial helicopter training pathway includes early solo flight—typically between 20 and 25 flight hours—with progression dependent on student consistency, commitment and financial capacity.
  • The organisation notes that student dropout rates are low, with financial constraints being the primary barrier. GLHC emphasises transparent cost expectations and a commitment to supporting dedicated trainees.
  • Leadership highlights growing employment demand for helicopter pilots in Canada, with an anticipated shortage as senior pilots retire. GLHC is one of only two active helicopter flight schools in Ontario.
