Indian Airline Adopts Flexible Pilot Contract Model with Structured Duty Cycles in 2025

November 10, 2025

India - Air India has introduced a new “Flexi Contract for Pilots” programme, offering flight crew on its A320, Boeing 777, and Airbus A350 fleets the option of shorter, structured work cycles designed to balance operational efficiency with pilot roster flexibility. The new 12-month flexi contract offers two alternating roster models:

  • Wide-body fleet pilots (B777, A350): 15-days-on / 15-days-off duty cycle, with 8 privilege leave days and 4 sick leave days per year.
  • Narrow-body fleet pilots (A320): 20-days-on / 10-days-off cycle, with 12 privilege leave days and 6 sick leave days annually.
  • The scheme applies to Line Pilots and Line Training Captains on the selected fleets. Junior First Officers, Type Rating Instructors, and Direct Entry pilots are not eligible.

Compensation and allowances under the flexi model include:

  • A minimum availability of 12 days per month for wide-body and 15 days for narrow-body pilots to qualify for 40 flight-hour pay.
  • Additional hours beyond 40 paid at existing contract rates.
  • Trainer, layover, and dead-head allowances remain unchanged, with NPS and car-lease deductions aligned to flexible pay structures.
  • The contract maintains loss-of-license cover, medical insurance, seniority rights, and base assignment policies. Pilots are prohibited from engaging in external employment during off-days.
