India – The cost of obtaining a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) in India has risen significantly as a direct consequence of surging jet fuel prices and a weakening rupee, with domestic CPL training costs increasing approximately 10% according to industry figures cited in Indian media reporting dated 19 April 2026.

Jet fuel prices for Indian flying schools have risen from ₹70 per litre to ₹131 per litre — an 87% increase — adding ₹2,500–3,000 per flying hour to training costs, which are being passed on to cadet pilots.
The total cost of obtaining a CPL in India — which requires a minimum of 200 flying hours and completion of theory examinations — has risen from a previous range of ₹50–60 lakh (approximately USD 58,000–70,000) to ₹60–70 lakh (approximately USD 70,000–82,000).
Training at overseas flight schools in the US or New Zealand now costs 15–16% more than the previous average range of ₹70–80 lakh for self-funded students, driven by the combination of higher global fuel costs and a weaker rupee increasing the dollar-denominated cost of training abroad.
A senior airline official reported that Indian flying training organisations (FTOs) are struggling to survive financially and have sought price increases on airline-sponsored cadet pilot program's, with some FTOs refusing to induct fresh batches at prior pricing levels.
Cadets training abroad under airline cadet program's pay in US dollars, with costs described as having increased significantly from a previous base of ₹1.3 crore-plus (approximately USD 150,000+).
A weaker rupee has also increased aircraft acquisition costs for Indian flight schools, with single-engine training aircraft costing approximately USD 650,000 and twin-engine aircraft approximately USD 1.5 million — both now more expensive in rupee terms.

Statements

"A litre of jet fuel for flying schools now costs Rs 131 per litre, up from earlier Rs 70/litre. So flying per hour costs Rs 2,500–3,000 more now. Overall CPL costs have increased by about 10% in India and about 15–16% abroad as jet fuel prices have increased globally. CPL, as it is, has been an expensive course and now it has gone beyond the reach of some aspirants," said Y N Sharma, CEO, Chimes Aviation Academy.
