India – Aviation training, technology and research organisation MH Cockpit has hosted Albert Tiong (CMT-P), Director (Global) at the Centre for Mindfulness, for a Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) workshop with its instructional team.
- Tiong has more than 15 years of experience across airline cadet development, instructor capability building and aviation training management in Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and the wider region. He has served in senior leadership positions, including Chief Ground Instructor and Chief Theoretical Knowledge Instructor. His expertise spans ATPL theoretical knowledge, Crew Resource Management (CRM), Threat and Error Management (TEM), competency development, and mindfulness-based mental skills training for pilots.
- The workshop was delivered to MH Cockpit’s instructional team and focused on CBTA, including the development of pilot competencies beyond technical knowledge. MH Cockpit identified decision-making, resilience, situational awareness and human performance among the areas discussed during the session.
- IATA describes CBTA as an approach being adopted across pilot licensing, airline and instructor training and provides dedicated guidance for instructor/evaluator competency development, assessment, Threat and Error Management and instructor standardisation.
- AFM previously reported that Tiong facilitated the “Calm in Command” programme with Malaysia’s Asia Aeronautical Training Academy, which integrates mindfulness-informed training with pilot competency development. In March 2026, AATA and the Centre for Mindfulness formalised the approach within the academy’s ab-initio curriculum, including links to EASA AREA 100 Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes development.
