California, USA – Proteus Flight School, the oldest continuously operating flight training provider at Santa Monica Airport, is marking its 30th year of operations as the airport's scheduled closure at the end of 2028 threatens to end a century of aviation education at the field and displace four active flight schools, maintenance facilities, and flying clubs.

Founded in 1996 at 3025 Airport Avenue, Proteus has trained nearly 3,000 people across three decades and currently operates from a primary location at 2501 Airport Avenue and a maintenance and instruction hangar at 3147 Donald Douglas Loop South, with a fleet of Piper Cherokee aircraft and an FAA-approved Redbird TD2 simulator.
Approximately half of the school's students transferred from other flight schools to complete their training at Proteus, and former students from the 1990s now enroll their own children at the school, demonstrating multi-generational retention.
Proteus employs career instructors rather than pilots building hours toward airline positions, a deliberate staffing model that operations manager Urooj Naveed credits alongside quality instruction and safety prioritization for the school's longevity in a competitive market.
The planned 2028 airport closure by the City of Santa Monica would end flight training operations at the field and make it difficult to retain experienced staff if operations were relocated. Naveed stated that the training environment at Santa Monica cannot easily be replicated elsewhere.
Naveed cited a series of city actions that have already eroded airport operations, including the 2017 runway shortening by 1,500 feet, reduction in available aircraft parking tie-downs, and the imposition of landing fees administered by private company Vector. The airport currently houses four flight schools alongside maintenance facilities, offices, flying clubs, and community programming.
Despite public narratives suggesting opposition to the airport, Naveed cited a January 2026 poll indicating 67% of Santa Monica residents want the airport to remain open, and questioned whether the city has the budget to convert the contaminated site into a park.
