Germany – Lufthansa Group has exercised purchase options for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, increasing its firm Boeing 737 MAX orderbook to 60 aircraft across the MAX 8 and MAX 10 variants.
- Lufthansa Group now has 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10s on firm order, with the latest 20-aircraft commitment carrying a stated list value of approximately US$3.4 billion. The MAX 10 aircraft are scheduled to begin arriving in the early 2030s.
- The original December 2023 agreement covered 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft and 60 additional MAX-family purchase options. Lufthansa Group said at the time that its first MAX 8 was expected in the third quarter of 2027.
- The September 2026 decision converts the first 20 of the original 60 purchase options, leaving 40 MAX-family options unexercised. Lufthansa Group expects more than 250 new aircraft to enter the wider group fleet by 2035.
- The Boeing 737 MAX 10 is the largest variant in the MAX family and offers greater seating capacity than the MAX 8. Lufthansa Group states that the aircraft will progressively replace older Airbus A320-family aircraft within the group, with approximately 30% lower fuel consumption than the older aircraft being replaced and unit costs approximately 20% lower due partly to its higher seating capacity.
