MAF UK Launches Mission Aviation Academy for Pilot and Engineer Training

United Kingdom – Humanitarian aviation organisation Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) has formally opened its Mission Aviation Academy at Cranfield Airport in Bedfordshire, consolidating MAF UK’s pilot and aircraft engineer development routes under a single training framework. The academy is intended to build a pipeline of aviation personnel for MAF’s overseas humanitarian operations.

• The Mission Aviation Academy brings together three training pathways:
  • The Future Pilot Programme for candidates starting with no flight experience
  • The Pilot Progression Pathway for candidates who already hold at least a PPL
  • The Engineer Training Scheme for prospective aircraft maintenance personnel
• The academy was formally opened on September 19, 2026, at Cranfield Airport, with Dr Jo Salter, the first British woman to fly a Royal Air Force fast jet operationally, flying a Diamond DA42 Twin Star during the event. The opening coincided with Girls in Aviation Day.
• MAF describes the Future Pilot Programme as its route for zero-experience entrants, while the Pilot Progression Pathway is designed to provide existing PPL holders with additional flying experience and competency development for mission-aviation roles. The engineering pathway provides practical preparation for future MAF aircraft engineers.
• MAF’s previously published Future Pilot Programme material states that successful candidates progress through PPL theory and practical training, experience building, CPL/ATPL theory, commercial and instrument flight training, and preparation for overseas deployment. The 2025 program documentation identified Mission Aviation Training Centre (MATC) at Teuge Airport in the Netherlands as MAF UK’s preferred provider for the PPL and initial experience-building phase. MAF’s new academy page does not specify whether that delivery arrangement has changed following the Cranfield launch.
• Applicants accepted into the academy are being prepared specifically for MAF service rather than the wider airline employment market. Reporting from the opening states that successful trainees are expected to commit to at least six years of overseas service with MAF.
• MAF UK’s 2025 annual report identified launching the Mission Aviation Academy as a 2026 priority intended to increase recruitment into overseas roles. During 2025, MAF UK added two trainees to its Future Pilot Programme and two to its Engineer Training Scheme.
• MAF currently states that its wider organisation operates more than 115 aircraft across 25 programs worldwide and flies in more than 25 countries, supporting humanitarian, medical, development and mission organisations serving remote communities.
