Major Indian Carrier Requests FDTL Flexibility to Manage Pilot Availability

December 5, 2025

India – According to media reports Indi Go, India’s largest airline by fleet size and passengers carried, has requested temporary Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) relaxations from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) until February 2026 as the airline manages an acute pilot availability gap and rising operational disruptions.

  • Indi Go has warned that flight cancellations are expected to increase over the next three days before stabilising.
  • The DGCA has instructed the airline to formally submit its request for FDTL relaxations together with an updated crew-hiring and mitigation plan, and to report progress every 15 days.
  • As of December 2025, Indi Go reported that it requires 4,575 Airbus pilots across P1 and P2 roles (post-implementation of Phase II of India’s new FDTL CAR), while only 4,511 pilots are currently available — a shortfall of 64 pilots.
  • The breakdown shows P1 (captain) requirement rising from 2,186 (Oct 25) to 2,422 (Nov 25) against availability of 2,357; P2 (first officer) requirement rising from 1,948 (Oct 25) to 2,153 (Nov 25) against availability of 2,194.
