Malaysian Flight School Completes First Global Mindfulness-Based Competency Development Training for Pilots
Malaysia – Asia Aeronautical Training Academy (AATA), a flight training organization based in Melaka, has concluded its participation in the inaugural “Calm in Command” mindfulness-informed pilot competency development program. This initiative marks the first global implementation of a mindfulness-based approach specifically tailored to enhance ICAO pilot competencies.
- The five-week program focused on developing key ICAO pilot competencies through mindfulness:
• Situation Awareness through Self-Awareness
• Communication
• Problem-Solving and Decision-Making
• Leadership and Teamwork
• Workload Management
-
The program integrates mindfulness techniques into ab-initio training to enhance competency-based training outcomes.
-
Program facilitator Albert Tiong confirmed plans to embed the mindfulness module into AATA’s future cadet training curriculum
In June the Centre for Mindfulness (Singapore) and Asia Aeronautical Training Academy (AATA) had launched “Calm in Command,” the world’s first structured mindfulness-informed training program tailored specifically for cadet pilots. Delivered during ab-initio training, this pioneering initiative marks a paradigm shift in pilot development by integrating emotional intelligence, mental clarity, and leadership under pressure into traditional flight instruction.
