Massachusetts, USA – Avier Flight School, a flight training organisation based at Beverly Regional Airport, has introduced psychometric assessments from UK-based aviation assessment provider Symbiotics across its training operations. The initiative aims to identify individual student learning characteristics earlier in the training process and help instructors adapt their teaching approaches.

  • The rollout incorporates two assessment tools: the Cadet Personality Questionnaire (CPQ), which is now required for all new students at the beginning of training, and the Pilot Readiness Indicator (PRI), which is being offered voluntarily to students already enrolled at the academy.
  • Avier is applying the assessments to both recreational and career-oriented student pilots. The results are intended to provide instructors with insight into how students think, prioritise tasks and manage workload before these characteristics become apparent through extended flight instruction.
  • The school has also incorporated psychometric assessment into its employment requirements, with existing instructors undergoing assessments as part of the initiative.
  • According to Founder, Owner and Chief Flight Instructor Paul Beaulieu, the assessments will be used to inform teaching rather than determine admission eligibility. The academy will maintain the existing FAA Airman Certification Standards while exploring whether individualised instruction can improve the training process.
  • Avier describes the initiative as an ongoing experiment and expects to share initial findings during 2027, providing an opportunity to evaluate the practical application of psychometric testing within general aviation flight instruction.
  • Symbiotics' Pilot Readiness Indicator comprises 48 questions covering mathematics, physics, English and cognitive reasoning, with a testing duration of approximately 74 minutes. The company's personality assessment tools examine behavioural characteristics, attitudes and individual working preferences, providing information that can support instructor understanding and individual development.
