New 2025 University–Flight School Partnership to Train Future Pilots in South Carolina

November 23, 2025

South Carolina, USA – Winthrop University has announced the launch of the state’s first Bachelor of Science in Aviation and Business Management, developed in partnership with A.C.E.S. Flight School at Rock Hill–York County Airport. Beginning in Fall 2026, the programme will offer an integrated academic and flight-training pathway designed to produce commercially qualified pilots with complementary business and leadership skills.

  • The degree combines FAA pilot certification milestones with university-level business coursework, allowing students to progress directly into commercial pilot roles upon graduation.
  • A.C.E.S. Flight School — operating from Rock Hill–York County Airport — will provide the hands-on flight-training component, while Winthrop University will deliver aviation management and business instruction.
  • The first cohort is expected to graduate in Spring 2030, supporting regional and national pilot-pipeline needs.
  • The programme is positioned to serve the Charlotte metropolitan area, leveraging proximity to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, an American Airlines hub with significant long-term pilot-demand indicators.

Statements

  • “Through this degree, our graduates can immediately become commercial pilots… while developing business acumen at the same time.” Sebastian van Delden, Provost, Winthrop University
  • “It just made sense for us to look at ways to address the pilot shortage… This programme reflects our commitment to academic innovation.” Edward Serna, President, Winthrop University
