New Advanced Jet-Trainer Proposal Targets UK RAF Pilot-Training Modernisation

November 23, 2025

United Kingdom – Boeing, Saab and BAE Systems have formalised a new partnership to offer the T-7A Red Hawk as the Royal Air Force’s next advanced jet trainer, positioning the aircraft as the successor to the Hawk T1 and Hawk T2 fleets. The proposal places the T-7A at the centre of a modernised UK fast-jet training system built around synthetic, live-virtual-constructive (LVC) training and expanded domestic industrial capability.

  • The partnership is aligned with the UK’s 2025 Strategic Defence Review, which calls for a cost-effective fast-jet trainer, expanded use of contractor support, and future-proofed training capacity for both domestic and overseas students.
  • If selected, the T-7A would be assembled in the United Kingdom, led by BAE Systems, re-establishing a sovereign jet-trainer production line and supporting long-term industrial capability after Hawk production ended in 2020.
  • The T-7A-based system would support RAF training for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-generation aircraft, including Typhoon, F-35 and the future Tempest, combining advanced synthetic environments with reduced-cost live flying.
  • For the RAF, replacing the Hawk T1 by ~2030 (affecting Red Arrows operations) and the Hawk T2 by 2040 is a growing priority due to declining aircraft availability, engine-life limitations, and training bottlenecks that have forced the UK to procure additional fast-jet training slots abroad.
  • The partnership also positions the T-7A for wider export opportunities, with Boeing confirming interest from Europe and Middle Eastern operators seeking to recapitalise fast-jet training fleets.

Statements

  • “The strong partnership between Boeing and Saab developed the T-7 to be the world’s best solution for future pilot training. By working with BAE Systems, Saab believes the U.K. can gain a worthy successor to the Hawk that is the right choice for pilots for decades to come.” Lars Tossman, Head of Aeronautics, Saab
  • “Our new collaboration with Boeing and Saab will enable us to present a compelling offer to the U.K. Royal Air Force… We’re committed to ensuring this solution offers the best outcome for the nation to support the U.K.’s combat air readiness and deliver economic benefit.” Simon Barnes, Group Managing Director, Air Sector, BAE Systems
