Ohio, USA – Airport operator Western Reserve Port Authority (WRPA) has held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the $7.4 million YNG Aviation Education Center at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, where construction is underway on a facility intended to support pilot education alongside aviation maintenance training. Youngstown State University (YSU) will provide the academic component and award qualifications associated with the aviation training offered at the airport.
- The latest reported project value is $7.4 million. WRPA awarded a $6.98 million construction contract to B&B Contractors and Developers in May 2026.
- WRPA's original project specification calls for an 18,000-square-foot aviation education building housing the YNG Flight School and an expansion of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics' Youngstown operation. The development is intended to bring pilot and aviation maintenance training into a larger purpose-built facility on the airport campus.
- YSU's current Associate of Applied Science in Aviation comprises 60-62 semester hours and includes Private Pilot Ground, Private Pilot Flight Training, Instrument Ground and Instrument Flight Training courses. The university also lists separate Private Pilot and Instrument aviation certificate pathways.
- Practical elements of YSU's aviation curriculum include simulation training, ground instruction and in-air flight training. The flight school reported a five-aircraft fleet when YSU formally launched its aviation offering in June 2025.
- WRPA also accepted a $1.67 million Federal Aviation Administration Airport Infrastructure Grant for the design and construction of a community hangar at the Aviation Education Center, alongside $942,792 for Taxilane C.
