Denmark – Aviation software developer and flight school management solution provider Oscar Yankee has expanded the Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) functions in its OY Wings flight training management platform, adding instructor assessment prompts, longitudinal student records and cohort-level analytics. The update gives approved training organisations additional digital tools for documenting competency development, identifying training gaps and maintaining auditable assessment records.
- OY Wings uses four factors to suggest competencies for instructor assessment: objectives that have not previously been assessed, areas in which a student has received lower scores, objectives not reviewed recently and minimum assessment requirements configured by the training organisation. Oscar Yankee states that instructors retain control over the assessment process.
- The platform allows training organisations to import the EASA Area 100 Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes framework or configure their own competency structures, grading scales and observable behaviours.
- Competencies and learning objectives can be attached to individual lesson plans, limiting each instructor assessment to the objectives relevant to that lesson while tracking coverage across the wider course.
- Oscar Yankee identifies CPL, ATPL, Multi-Crew Cooperation and company-specific programmes as potential applications for the functionality.
- Each assessment contributes to an interactive student report card containing historical scores, competency trends and individual learning-objective records. Results can be aggregated across multiple KSA-enabled courses to show whether performance is improving, remaining stable or requiring intervention.
- Assessment records are timestamped, version controlled and linked to the competency framework that was active when the assessment was completed. Subsequent changes to a syllabus or competency definition do not alter the historical record, providing an audit trail for training and regulatory reviews.
- Role-based permissions allow training organisations to restrict access to assessment information, while configurable grading systems support integration with their approved training manuals and internal procedures.
- School-wide analytics can identify learning objectives receiving consistently lower scores across groups of students. This allows training management personnel to investigate whether recurring weaknesses relate to individual performance, instructional delivery or course design.
- EASA introduced Area 100 KSA to develop and assess student pilots’ ability to apply knowledge across subjects and demonstrate technical and non-technical competencies. The framework requires applicable approved training organisations to document formative and summative assessments before students are recommended for their final theoretical knowledge examinations.

- AFM previously reported that Oscar Yankee had developed a three-component OY Wings integration framework comprising a GraphQL API, webhooks and an MCP server. The architecture was intended to support automated training workflows, external analytics and future AI-enabled applications.
