Australia – RMIT University's Aviation Academy, which flew a record-breaking 20,000+ flight hours in 2025, has launched a "Fly Away" program — a first-of-its-kind cross-country initiative for CPL students — after a successful trial that saw three students traverse Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia in six days, building approximately 25 hours of command time across regional aerodromes.

  • The Fly Away program sends CPL students and Grade 1 Flight Instructors on intensive multi-day cross-country journeys to unfamiliar airports and regional environments, designed to build flying hours, confidence, and operational experience outside the academy's home training area at Point Cook Airfield.
  • The program has now been formally added as an optional inclusion in RMIT Aviation Academy courseware for students undertaking their Commercial Pilot Licence, with plans to roll out Fly Aways to all eligible students.
  • Future iterations will extend the geographic scope as far north as central Queensland and as far west as western South Australia, significantly broadening the cross-country training experience.

RMIT Aviation Academy operates a fleet of over 28 aircraft from its Point Cook base and is targeting 25,000 flight hours in 2026, up from the record 20,000+ hours achieved in 2025. The Fly Away program demonstrates interstate deployment of the fleet, expanding operational reach beyond Victoria.
