South Florida’s Largest Flight School Officially Welcomes New Plane as it Adds College Accreditation and Largest Student Intake
South Florida’s largest flight school and only dedicated aviation college Wayman Aviation Academy officially welcomed a new aircraft. Students and instructors were joined by Pembroke Pines Fire Department who will be conducting a water salute.
Amid a pilot shortage and air travel challenges, the college has been able to recruit its largest college and vocational class of 43 students in the first month of 2023. Wayman Aviation Academy recently received its accreditation as a College in order to provide an Associate’s Degree in Aeronautical Science for students who attend collegiate education along with their flight certificates.
“Adding the 2022 Tecnam 2006T aircraft to our fleet provides students the opportunity to learn on state-of-the-art equipment and continues our commitment to resilience,” said Wayman Aviation Vice President Eddy Luy. The Italian-manufactured plane has high-fuel efficiency and will lower fuel emissions of flight training by almost 70%.
Training is particularly important to the first-generation students who have enrolled at Wayman Aviation Academy this year thanks in part to access to funding that came with the accreditation. “The ability to fly new aircrafts allows us to become international pilots and true global citizens,” said student Roxana Flores who joined the school after fleeing Venezuela. Students of Wayman Aviation’s first college class represent 18 countries.
The creation of a new aviation college comes during an important juncture in the industry. An ongoing international pilot shortage exacerbated by the pandemic has left a need for new pilots that is being unmet by current trainers. The Wayman Aviation college program provides one of the few accessible routes for future pilot candidates to obtain their licenses as well as a supplementary degree to help alleviate the issue. The college has created additional partnerships with Miami-Dade College and Florida Memorial University, an HBCU, to allow their students to log training hours on the new plane.
“Wayman Aviation is proud to be a part of the solution to a global issue as well as to provide an economical pathway for those who wish to follow their aviation dreams,” said instructor Nick Silva. Nick, an FAA-certified flight instructor, shares insights into flight training with his over 50 thousand Instagram followers on a regular basis and is looking forward to being among the first to tour the new plane.
