Sri Lanka & UAE – SriLankan Airlines is conducting a specialised Airbus A330 Line Flying Under Supervision (LFUS) program for six senior training and examination pilots from Etihad Airways. The assignment extends SriLankan’s third-party A330 training activity into operational line flying using its instructors, flight crews and aircraft.
- The Etihad group comprises five Type Rating Examiners (TREs) and one Senior Type Rating Examiner (STRE), with SriLankan Airlines providing supervised operational exposure on the Airbus A330.
- Two of the six examiner pilots completed their respective programs on September 23, 2026. SriLankan said the remaining four were scheduled to complete training by the end of September.
- SriLankan Airlines worked with the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Defence and other stakeholders to establish the required framework and obtain clearances for the training activity.
- The program is operationally different from simulator-only third-party training because it uses SriLankan Airlines’ active A330 operation to provide supervised line flying. For airline training providers, this combines simulator and ground-training capability with access to an operating widebody fleet and qualified training personnel.
- SriLankan’s current fleet page lists 23 Airbus aircraft, comprising 10 A330 widebodies and 13 A320/A321-family aircraft.
- SriLankan Aviation College also operates an Airbus A330-200 Full Flight Simulator under SriLankan Airlines. The Sim Industries device, manufactured in 2013, represents an A330 STD 2.4 configuration with Rolls-Royce Trent 772B modelling and is qualified to CS-FSTD(A) Level D standards.
