United Kingdom – Airlines UK, the industry body representing UK-registered carriers, has called on the UK government to introduce a package of emergency relief measures to support airlines facing sustained jet fuel price increases driven by the ongoing geopolitical disruption to global fuel supply.

Airlines UK is proposing a temporary permit to import US-produced jet fuel into the United Kingdom, where such imports are currently banned, alongside refinery obligations to safeguard domestic jet fuel supply — reflecting the severity of the supply-side pressure on UK aviation fuel availability.
The lobby group is seeking suspension or relief from multiple financial and regulatory obligations including Air Passenger Duty (APD), the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), and passenger compensation requirements for cancellations linked to fuel availability disruptions.
Airlines UK has also called for relief from normal airport slot usage rules and night flying restrictions to provide carriers with greater operational flexibility during the fuel crisis period.
The proposals follow similar capacity reduction measures across European carriers, including Lufthansa Group's recent removal of 20,000 short-haul flights from its summer schedule and SunExpress's suspension of new cadet pilot recruitment, both citing the impact of elevated fuel costs on operations.
If implemented, the measures would have downstream effects on pilot training demand and airline workforce planning, with any sustained capacity reductions potentially impacting airline hiring pipelines, cadet program intake volumes, and simulator training throughput across UK-based carriers.
