UK Runway Expansion Prompts Renewed Calls for Accessible Pilot Training

November 26, 2025

United Kingdom – The British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) has welcomed the UK government’s decision to award the contract for construction of Heathrow Airport’s third runway, while urging policymakers to address the accessibility and financial barriers that continue to limit the country’s pilot-training pipeline.

  • The expansion is expected to add 276,000 additional flights per year, creating significant new cockpit and ground-based employment opportunities across the UK aviation sector.
  • BALPA noted that the increased flight activity will require a larger pool of UK-trained pilots and emphasised that current training pathways—costing more than £100,000 without access to student loans—remain out of reach for many qualified candidates.
  • The union called on the government to put forward policy solutions that make pilot training more financially accessible and ensure sufficient national pilot capacity by the time the new runway and terminal enter service.
  • BALPA highlighted that the private sector is financing Heathrow’s expansion and urged the government to match this commitment through measures that support pilot-training affordability and workforce development.
