US Airline to Open New Pilot Crew Bases – First Time in Over 20 Years

02nd Dec 2022

United announced it will be opening new pilot crew bases – a full B737 crew base in Orlando (MCO) with a potential co-terminal in Tampa (TPA), and a B737 crew base in Las Vegas (LAS), effective May 2023.

“This is the first time in over 20 years we will be opening a completely new location for a pilot base – a decision that was made possible by our United Next growth plan and one that will better position many of our pilots who already live in these locations where the flying currently exists,” said United in a release.

The new bases will make United Airlines pilots based closer to where pilots live and fewer pilots commuting to work, reduce delays by having pilots based in geographic regions of the country, help drive operational integrity and recovery during off-schedule operations, and crew flying efficiently thanks to the scale and scope of the network schedule in these cities, and in many instances more efficiently than if crewed it from other bases.

Note: These pilot crew bases will not be new hubs or satellite terminals. They will be supported by Flight Qualified Management pilots and staffed with reserve pilots.
