Texas, United States - The City of San Angelo Development Corporation (COSADC) Board approved a partial funding grant of $2 million for the new Angelo State University (ASU) flight training Facility, which is estimated to cost over $7.5 million.

ASU commercial aviation instructor and director Scott Turner described the new facility as 15,000 square-feet, featuring three classrooms, a simulator room, pre-flight and post-flight briefing areas for instructors and students, a couple of conference rooms, offices, and various other amenities.

Back in December 2023 Angelo State University (ASU) provided an update on the progress of its flight training programs and facilities during a San Angelo City Council meeting on December 19. The development is part of an ongoing collaboration among the City of San Angelo, ASU, and the San Angelo Regional Airport to enhance commercial airline education in the Concho Valley. The partnership involves constructing a new pilot training facility with the support of Skyline Aviation flight school. The proposed facility, estimated to cost $7.5 million, will span 15,000 square feet and cater to the growing Bachelor of Commercial Aviation program, which has seen enrollment increase from 28 students in 2021 to 138 students presently, with a projected goal of 250 to 300 students by 2025.

During the meeting, Donald Topliff, ASU’s provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, presented updates, outlining key projections and requirements.

The program anticipates needing one aircraft for every seven students, with 30 aircraft necessary for the 200 students projected to enroll in the fall of 2024.
ASU already possesses 20 aircraft, and six more are on order, with a total inventory cost exceeding $12 million.
The facility's layout includes three classrooms and three flight simulators.
The expansion is expected to impact the community positively, with economic projections exceeding $5 million per year.
Additionally, the regional airport anticipates a significant increase in operations, prompting the construction of additional hangars.
The partnership with Skyline Aviation has resulted in the company leasing a hangar and establishing a new fixed-base operation in San Angelo.
ASU is also exploring collaborations with Howard College to initiate an airframe and power plant program for aircraft maintenance.
