Global Pilot Training Group CAE and Canadian Airline Announce Scholarship for 4 Aspiring Pilots

Air Canada and CAE, two Montreal-based global aviation companies, marked the fifth anniversary of the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship and announced that applications for the 2024 edition of the Scholarship are now open.

Up to eight young Canadian women studying to become commercial pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers will be awarded scholarships to pursue their training in 2024. Of the eight, four recipients training to be commercial pilots will join the CAE Women in Flight program as ambassadors.

“As this scholarship goes into its fifth year, it is incredibly gratifying to see the accomplishments of previous recipients. These young women have realized their dreams and are soaring high in all regions of Canada. From the cockpit of a 737 to a flight instructor job, these scholarship recipients are wonderful role models. I am so proud of Air Canada and CAE’s support for Canadian women in aviation,” said Judy Cameron, Boeing 777 Captain at Air Canada (retired), and Director, Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

“It makes me, and everyone at Air Canada, extremely proud to see the success of many of our past recipients of the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship. Already, some have achieved their goals of becoming commercial pilots or Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and I look forward to seeing their careers progress. And the future is bright not only for them, but the next group of recipients as we celebrate the fifth anniversary of this wonderful scholarship named after Air Canada’s first female pilot. Congratulations to all,” said Murray Strom, Senior Vice President, Flight Operations and Maintenance at Air Canada.

“We are proud to help fund the training of our four Women in Flight ambassadors and look forward to seeing all eight scholarship recipients follow in Captain Judy Cameron’s footsteps and pursue a career in aviation at a critical time. CAE forecasts a need for 63,000 commercial pilots in North America over the next 10 years, so we have to broaden the appeal of a career in aviation and support underrepresented groups, including women, who currently represent only five percent of pilots. Not only will these deserving recipients have the chance to follow their chosen career paths, but they will also become role models to the young women who will become the next generation of aviation professionals,” said Michel Azar-Hmouda, CAE’s Division President, Commercial Aviation Training.

The annual Captain Judy Cameron Scholarships, established in honour of Air Canada’s first female pilot to help foster the next generation of women following in her trailblazing footsteps, are awarded in conjunction with the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

The Captain Judy Cameron scholarships were launched in 2019 and initially awarded to four recipients. Since 2023, Air Canada and CAE have joined forces to double the number of recipients and award eight scholarships to deserving women.

Scholarship applications open on Nov. 1, 2023 here.

About Judy Cameron

Judy Cameron became the first female pilot hired by Air Canada, Canada’s largest airline, in April 1978 at the age of 23. She was the first woman to graduate from Selkirk College’s Aviation Technology Program in 1975. Throughout her flying career of 40 years and over 23,000 hours, she has flown the DC-3, Twin Otter, Hawker Siddeley 748, DC-9, Lockheed 1011, Airbus 320, Boeing 767 and Boeing 777 to the far corners of the world. She became a captain in 1997 and in 2010, she became the first female captain in Canada of a Boeing 777, the largest aircraft in Air Canada’s fleet. She retired in 2015, received the Elsie MacGill Northern Lights award in the Flight Operations category that year, and in 2016 she was chosen by the 99s (International Organization of Women Pilots) to be on its Canadian postage stamp. Today, Captain Cameron continues her volunteer work mentoring and supporting the next generation of female pilots with the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

Air Canada proudly launched the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship in her honour in 2019.

About CAE Women in Flight Ambassador Program

CAE’s Women in Flight Ambassador program is helping create a movement to encourage young girls and women to dream big and have no limits. As only five percent of pilots worldwide are women, this program is geared to show women that they too can reach for the sky. The goal of the program is to build a community of ambassadors who demonstrate leadership skills, active involvement in their communities, perseverance, who are passionate about aviation, and inspire women to join the pilot profession. Launched in 2018, the Women in Flight Ambassador program was expanded in July 2022 to include partnerships with more airline customers to increase the number of scholarships given. This is a co-branded program in which CAE is partnering with airline customers globally to create women pilot ambassadors via scholarships ranging from partially funded to fully funded pilot training.

Global Aircraft Manufacturer, Airbus, Officially Establishes Wholly-Owned Subsidiary in China

France-headquartered aircraft manufacturer Airbus officially established a wholly-owned subsidiary—Satair (Chengdu) Co Ltd in Shuangliu district in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan province.

This marks another giant step forward on Airbus’ map of life-cycle services, following the completion of Airbus’ aircraft lifecycle service center in Chengdu on September 28, 2023.

Satair is a global leader in the civil aviation industry supply chain, offering a wide range of products including aircraft spare parts and tooling with over 1,000,000 inventory part numbers. These products cater to all types of aircraft.

Richard Stoddart, CEO of Satair, said Satair Chengdu, whose business scope encompasses the purchase of pre-owned aircraft and the management and trade of available used aircraft materials, is an important business line of the Airbus Lifecycle Services Center project.

The company is expected to provide a more diverse supplement to Satair’s existing aircraft material support system, enrich the options of available aircraft materials, and offer more comprehensive material services and support to major airlines, aircraft maintenance facilities, and component repair centers.

George Xu, executive vice president of Airbus and CEO of Airbus China, said Airbus Lifecycle Services Center in Chengdu offers industry leading one-stop sustainable solutions by recycling middle life and aged aircraft, and it’s testimony to Airbus’ commitment to China as a long-term reliable partner.

“Thanks to our cooperation in Chengdu, Airbus completes our industrial value chain in China from design, parts manufacturing, final assembly of aircraft, technical support service for in-service fleet to end-of-life service,” he said.

The Airbus Lifecycle Services Center, first such facility outside of Europe by Airbus, will provide services covering aircraft parking, storage, maintenance, upgrades, conversions, dismantling and recycling for various aircraft types, after put into operation in December. It has a storage capacity of 125 aircraft.

Home to the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, the Shuangliu district is build a 40-square-kilometer economic zone surrounding the airport, to forge a strong aviation industry cluster, and thus to transform itself from a “city with an airport” to an “airport city”.

Local officials said the district will keep strengthening strategic collaboration with Airbus to jointly attract projects, host professional forums, and attract businesses in the fields of component maintenance, composite manufacturing, and engine transactions.

Regional Aircraft Manufacturer, Embraer, Hosts the 2023 China Regional Aviation Forum

As China’s civil aviation market continues to grow, fueled by rising domestic demand, the first post-pandemic Embraer China Regional Aviation Forum is returning.

Embraer will hold the 6th China Regional Aviation Forum (RAF 2023) in the city of Qingdao from 7-8 November 2023. The theme for the event is Connectivity and Differentiation – New Momentum in Regional Aviation Development.

The forum will welcome over 150 participants from the government, domestic and overseas airlines, airports, lessors, institutes, trade associations, and other related organizations. Speakers will include airlines executives, industry experts, and think tanks. The group will lead discussions on a variety of topics ranging from the global and China regional aviation market development to successful business models and experience sharing for airlines.

“Through the forum, Embraer provides a platform that pools wisdom and experience of the most qualified and knowledgeable people to discuss and debate how to expand regional networks and how to boost connectivity,” said Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation. “The key is to offer efficient and rightsized aircraft to build the connectivity of China. The E2, which complements China’s indigenous products perfectly, is the perfect aircraft to do that as it will connect second & third tier cities as well as remote regions. Now that the E190-E2 and E195-E2 are both certified by CAAC, we are confident about our prospects in China, supporting growth and helping China Civil Aviation embrace a more sustainable aviation future.”

“We believe the regional market is a key driver of the future growth. There are one billion people living in China that have never taken a flight,” said Guo Qing, Managing Director and VP Commercial Aviation, Embraer China. “China Civil Aviation Authority attaches significant importance to the integration of the overall network, having trunk and regional routes more connected to feed traffic to each other. In this context, our E2 aircraft will be an efficient tool to help small and medium-sized airlines focus on the regional segment by differentiating in business model, market access, product and service offerings,” Guo added.

The China Regional Aviation Forum was previously held in Kunming, Yinchuan, Guiyang, Ordos, and Sanya. This year’s event is being jointly organized by China Aviation News and Civil Aviation Management Institute of China (CAMIC).

Embraer in China

2023 marks Embraer’s 23rd year in China. In September 2000, the first Embraer ERJ145 was delivered to Sichuan Airlines, and in May 2008, Embraer delivered its first E-Jet, an E190, to Tianjin Airlines. Today, there are 85 E-Jets flying with Tianjin Airlines, Hebei Airlines, Beibu Gulf Airlines, Colorful Guizhou Airlines in China. The E-Jet fleet played an important role in the Covid-19 period to maintain key routes and help the industry to recover.

Data shows China’s civil aviation market continues its growth, fueled by rising domestic demand. According to CAAC, in the first eight-month of 2023, China domestic passenger traffic volume reached 394.8 million, up 115 percent compared with 2022. The domestic market has already exceeded the 2019 level since April 2023 due to pent-up demand following the pandemic.

This year in August, Embraer E195-E2, the largest member of the E-Jet family, has been granted its Type Certificate by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), which follows the certification of the E190-E2 received from CAAC in November last year, during the Zhuhai Air Show.

Embraer has also established a comprehensive after-sales service and support system in China, including authorized maintenance centers, spare parts warehouses, and complete pilot training network. It has laid a solid foundation for the new generation of E2 family to operate in China.
