CAE to Offer Business Aviation Scholarship for a Challenger 350 Aircraft Type-Rating

Global pilot training solution provider CAE and the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) announced at the NBAA Conference and Exhibition that CAE will be offering a CAE Business Aviation Scholarship for a Challenger 350 aircraft type-rating to OBAP.

The full scholarship will give a qualified pilot the opportunity to pursue their Challenger 350 type-rating training at one of CAE’s business aviation training centres. The CAE Business Aviation Scholarship will be open for application in early 2024.

“CAE forecasts a need for 284,000 new pilots globally over the next 10 years, yet only two percent of pilots today are Black or African American. We are proud to partner with organizations like OBAP to attract Black, Indigenous and People of Colour to a career in aviation and offer an aspiring pilot the opportunity to pursue a rewarding career in the flight deck,” said Alexandre Prevost, CAE’s Division President, Business Aviation and Helicopter Training.

“CAE is committed to fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion within our organization, our communities, and our industry,” said Pascale Alpha, CAE’s Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer. “While the demand for qualified pilots is high, access to training is a barrier of entry for many. As the world leader in pilot training, we are already playing a role in bringing more diversity to aviation with our ‘Women in Flight’ Ambassador Program and our scholarships for women in corporate aviation, and we are proud to expand our scholarship programs to attract people from underrepresented communities and show them that a future is aviation is exciting and accessible.”

Michael Ponce, OBAP Scholarship Committee Chair, expressed his excitement about this initiative, stating, “We are thrilled to offer the CAE Challenger 350 Scholarship in partnership with CAE. This partnership reinforces OBAP’s unwavering commitment to increasing diversity in the industry by providing opportunities for our membership to pursue careers in aerospace. It also expands our organization’s reach into the business aviation sector, offering a leg up to aviators who might not otherwise have access.”

OBAP is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the aerospace industry, and this scholarship represents the organization’s commitment to that goal.

CAE and Aircraft Performance Group (APG), a leading provider of cutting-edge flight operations software and applications, unveiled a strategic partnership that will harness APG’s expertise in aircraft performance and runway analysis instruction to enhance CAE’s business aviation training.

“The continuous training of aviation professionals is a key part of APG’s strategy,” said Shawn Mechelke, President of APG. “Doing so with CAE’s business aviation training shows our commitment to continuing to be the leading provider of runway analysis and flight operations solutions for aviation businesses worldwide.”

“The partnership with APG enhances CAE’s business aviation training by giving our instructor pilots unique insight into runway analysis to help address industry-wide knowledge gaps,” said Alexandre Prevost, CAE’s Division President, Business Aviation and Helicopter Training. “CAE is committed to pioneering training innovations, and through collaborations with partners like APG, we can harness our collective strengths to provide essential training that enhances safety skills.”

As part of this partnership, CAE instructor pilots will be trained on runway analysis and the intricacies of mastering the coordination between a SID (Standard Instrument Departure) and an EOP (Engine Out Procedure) to enhance flight safety and streamline operations. The course will also demystify landing factors, TALPA (Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment), the Global Reporting Format, how to comply with dispatch landing factors and Landing Distance at Time of Arrival (LDTA) calculations, and more.

The comprehensive training in runway analysis and obstacle clearance aligns with FAA notice N 8900.664 which underscores the importance of ensuring all crew members, regardless of previous authorization, are properly trained in utilizing contractor’s data or other airport obstacle analysis programs. Global Pilot Training Solution Provider CAE and Sun Air Jets Collaborate on New Pilot Development Program

Global pilot training solution provider CAE and Sun Air Jets announced at the National Business Aviation Association Conference and Exhibition that they are collaborating on an innovative Pilot Development Program (PDP) to enhance safety and address the increased need for business aviation pilots. Launched in Morristown, NJ, in July 2023 with courses developed for King Air’s 350 pilots, this new Sun Air Jets program allows young pilots to gain flight hours and experience by operating flights as second-in-command (SIC) on aircraft that do not require more than one pilot.

The program allows pilots to obtain invaluable on-the-job experience as they build their hours and progress to becoming a pilot-in-command (PIC). Several pilots have already graduated to PIC thanks to their participation in the CAE program, and many more will have a similar opportunity at Sun Air Jets.

“We are very excited to implement this pilot development program at Sun Air Jets to enhance safety within our operations and to meet the demand for pilots and workforce challenges”, says Ed Fares, Director of Operations at Sun Air Jets. “This Pilot Development Program will help provide additional qualified pilots while increasing overall safety. The program is designed to bring beneficial operating experience to our young pilots allowing them the opportunity to grow into bigger jet aircraft and build a strong foundation as a safe and professional pilot.”

“With the increased demand for business aviation pilots, CAE is committed to working in partnership with operators like Sun Air Jets to ensure they have the highly trained pilots needed to maintain safe and efficient operations,” said Alexandre Prevost, CAE’s Division President – Business Aviation and Helicopter Training. “We are thrilled to bring this innovative pilot development program to life with the Sun Air Jets team as it not only gives young pilots a way to build their hours and gain experience, but it also allows them to fly with more seasoned colleagues and benefit from their knowledge, resulting in safer operations.”

According to the National Business Aviation Association, the SIC PDP, found in amended Federal Aviation Regulation (“FAR”) Part 135.99, allows a pilot employed by a FAR Part 135 air carrier and serving as second-in-command in a multiengine airplane or single-engine, turbine-powered airplane to log SIC flight during operations that do not require a second pilot. The revised rule also allows flight time gained in a SIC PDP to be used to meet certain aeronautical requirements of FAR Part 61 for an ATP certificate and certain aeronautical experience requirements of FAR Part 135. Part 135 operators that have been issued Operation Specification A062 are permitted to assign a qualified SIC and the SIC will be eligible to log the flight time if participating in the operator’s SIC
