University Shares Analysis on Circuit Training in Electric Training Aircraft

Canada based University of Waterloo and Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre (WWFC) instructors and Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) researchers shared the following findings around pilot training with electric training aircraft;

  • The Pipistrel Velis Electro, the world’s first certified electric plane, was tested for takeoff, circuit, and landing phases at the Waterloo International Airport.
  • A team of instructors and researchers recorded and analyzed data from the Velis Electro’s onboard data logger during 11 flights totaling 10 hours.
  • Pilots completed 65 circuits, with an average flight time of 54 minutes and an average air time of 40 minutes.
  • The battery’s state of charge (SOC)
    • Dropped only 2% during 14 minutes of checks and taxiing due to the electric motor being off when not in motion.
    • Dropped by 9-11% during the takeoff and climb stage of each circuit, taking 6-7 minutes, and extended circuits used up to 21% SOC.
  • Power settings varied during different stages of the circuit, with maximum power of 64 kW used for takeoff, altitude is maintained with a power setting of 18 to 28 kW and almost no power is used during the descent.
  • After landing, the plane underwent a ‘touch-and-go’ maneuver, allowing multiple takeoffs and landings without stopping, enabling pilots to familiarize themselves with each stage of the circuit.
  • Charging the battery took approximately 60 minutes to reach 99% SOC, allowing for an average of six circuits and 54 minutes of flight time after an hour of charging.
  • The study will continue to explore the impact of temperature on battery performance during fall and winter operations.

Hungarian Pilot Simulator Training Center, PHARMAFLIGHT, Announces New Practical Head Instructor

PHARMAFLIGHT announced Captain György Tóth as the new chief practical instructor from July of this year. The specialist with a very outstanding and prestigious flight history – in addition to having more than 28,000 flying hours behind him – has already initiated hundreds of future pilots into the mysteries of aviation. Perhaps it is enough to say that he taught and tested almost five thousand hours on the Airbus A320 simulator.

According to him, the idea of becoming a pilot was formulated when he was five years old. Then, after another five years, a visit to the triple border mountain only confirmed the early idea, so the path from daydreaming to reality became straight when he was able to start flying at the age of fourteen.

Like many others who persisted in this profession for a long time, he also began his acquaintance with the profession on a glider, which then culminated in civil pilot training at Nyíregyháza College. He loved the college so much that he stayed there as a flight instructor after receiving his diploma.

Then, at the first opportunity (after a few failed applications), he transferred to Malév, where he spent almost three decades. In the meantime, he went to work abroad for a few years, to be precise in Taiwan, for the sake of his other big dream, the Jumbo, the Boeing 747. When he returned to Malév after six years, he played an essential role in the creation of Malév Express. This small independent unit operated as a subsidiary of Malév. When Wizz Air was established, the flight operation was set up with very, very serious efforts, in which he took the lion’s share. He retired after more than ten years as a pilot-manager and active captain. Of course, he has been working ever since and participates in the training of pilots as a senior instructor and examiner

It shows that he still loves and enjoys his work, education and exams. According to him, the basis of everything is that both the instructor and the student or examinee try to give their best performance. When asked if the future pilots will receive a strict teacher in his person, he says that he tries to create a calm atmosphere in every situation and thus give the other side the conditions for the best performance, but at the same time the expectations must be met. There are no exceptions or excuses from them!

It is also very important later, during commercial flight, that the pilot should be able to manage himself, minimize the influence of private life on his work, and be able to cooperate with the crew even in the wildest climate change conditions. Must be mentally stable and well motivated for this profession.
