Visionary Training Resources Brings VR Technology to Aeronautics Classes at US based Kent State University

United States headquartered virtual reality training solution provider Visionary Training Resources (VTR) is partnering with the College of Aeronautics and Engineering (CAE) at Kent State University, integrating virtual reality (VR) technology into the university’s senior-level Professional Pilot course. The progressive course, which examines the systems used in air transport aircraft and focuses intently on the Boeing 737, prepares students on the principles and operations they will soon encounter as professional pilots in airlines, cargo operations, and business aviation. Students will utilize flight deck familiarization modules, as well as checklist and procedures training and assessment modules developed by VTR, to augment traditional learning materials and enhance their grasp of critical information. The fall 2023 class is set to complete an oral exam in a VR environment, a first and exciting step toward the incorporation of previously inaccessible flight decks in a thoroughly immersive manner.

The introduction of VTR’s VR training modules and flight deck in spring 2023 was met with enthusiastic reception from the students. “The VR training would be extremely helpful for not only [the air transport class], which requires us to memorize where certain items are in the flight deck; this would also be helpful in preparation for airline training,” remarked one insightful student. Other students echoed this sentiment, appreciating the realism and immersive qualities of the virtual flight decks, which fostered a hands-on approach to learning, solidifying their understanding and retention of complex systems.

Jim Sebastian, a professor at CAE and a captain with Southwest Airlines, shared his perspective on the initiative, “While immersed in the virtual flight deck, students will be trained and evaluated on their knowledge of aircraft systems and procedures while experiencing all the realistic issues, distractions, and additive conditions that come with being a professional pilot. They will be tasked with applying their systems knowledge and managing normal flight deck tasks while assessing and mitigating risk using all available resources, simulating the type of training they’ll receive in a professional airline training course. The VR is a realistic simulation that will both challenge and train the students. VR is the future of education and training, and I’m looking forward to using this tool in my class as a baseline to expand to other courses.”

To oversee the successful implementation of the VR programs, Dr. Stephanie Fussell, a VR Aviation Research Scientist at VTR and an Assistant Professor and Aeronautics Program Coordinator at Kent State, is collaborating closely with Sebastian. Together, they aim to ensure that this innovative technology significantly enhances learning outcomes. The partnership between CAE and VTR, first announced in June of 2023, has paved the way for an enriching educational experience and reaffirms VTR’s mission to produce better pilots through the integration of VR into the training process.

About Visionary Training Resources

Founded by pilots with extensive safety and training backgrounds, Visionary Training Resources (VTR) delivers a powerful pilot training platform, FlightDeckToGo®, which leverages the power of virtual reality (VR) technology. Portable, easy-to-use, realistic, and dimensionally accurate, FlightDeckToGo® provides important advantages over traditional flight simulators, including reduced training costs, cost savings on aircraft familiarization training, and better retention of information.

Flight School Management Solution Provider FlightLogger and Spidertracks Announce Strategic Partnership for Seamless Flight Data Integration

FlightLogger and Spidertracks, industry leaders in cloud-based aviation management software and real-time flight tracking solutions, are excited to announce a strategic partnership. A groundbreaking integration between the two will be officially unveiled at the University Aviation Association conference in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The integration empowers flight schools with real-time, automated flight data input, eradicating the need for manual flight information recording, and improving data accuracy. The core of this seamless integration lies in the Spider hardware, a compact yet powerful unit delivered by Spidertracks that can be easily installed in each aircraft. The Spider autonomously captures a wealth of flight data in real-time, using satellite technology. When an aircraft with an installed Spider takes off, the device immediately starts recording various flight metrics, including takeoff and landing times and intricate details of the flight path. With the new integration, all this information is automatically and securely transmitted to the FlightLogger system, where it is seamlessly added to corresponding lesson flight registrations.

Improves Safety, Documentation, and Quality of Training

The immediate benefit of this integration is the automation of flight data entry, saving invaluable time for instructors who can channel more attention into the quality of their training sessions. Furthermore, the automatic capture and seamless transfer of complete flight tracks enables instructors and flight schools to access a holistic view of each flight almost instantly after landing.

This innovation introduces an additional layer of security and compliance by offering precise documentation to enhance flight schools’ operations. This can be used both for performance analysis during debriefing sessions and serves as valid, compliant records.

The integration is available at no additional charge for FlightLogger and Spidertracks customers.

Leaders Speak: Voices Behind the Innovation

Kenneth Jeppesen, FlightLogger founder and CEO, says, “This partnership paves the way for even better and safer flight training. Automating these data collection processes enables instructors to focus more on training, less on paperwork, and provides schools with precise documentation of each flight.”

Aleks Banas, CEO of Spidertracks, remarks, “The Spidertracks integration with FlightLogger will elevate safety and operational efficiency within aviation training. The collaboration represents a groundbreaking shift in leveraging accurate fight data to improve training outcomes.”
