Airbus Reveals Early Plans for Next-Generation Narrowbody Aircraft
France – Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has outlined early plans for a next-generation aircraft that will replace its A320neo family within 10 to 15 years, aiming for significant gains in fuel efficiency and sustainability. While specifics remain under wraps, the new design is expected to be 20–30% more efficient than current models, with a strong focus on emerging technologies and scalable production.
- Airbus plans to introduce a successor to the A320neo in the second half of the 2030s, targeting 20–30% improved fuel efficiency.
- The aircraft concept may include open-fan engine designs currently being studied by engine maker CFM International (a GE and Safran JV).
- The company emphasized that the new platform will be a “major gap … not incremental,” according to Bruno Fichefeux, head of future programmes.
- Key technologies under development include:
-
A “Wing of Tomorrow” prototype featuring lightweight folding composite wings.
-
Broader use of robotic assembly and advanced plastic composites.
-
- Airbus has not finalized a launch date but is aligning timelines with technology readiness and regulatory frameworks.
- Plans include scaling monthly production of the new aircraft up to 100 units—almost double the current A320neo output.
- Airbus continues to explore hydrogen fuel-cell aircraft for regional applications, though that program has been delayed by 5–10 years beyond the original 2035 target.
- The slow development timeline comes as competitor Boeing faces internal and financial constraints, giving Airbus more flexibility in pacing innovation.
