USA – California Aeronautical University (CAU) is proud to announce the launch of its first Reach Flight Center in partnership with Air Fleet Training Systems, expanding access to university-level aviation education for aspiring pilots in the Northeast.

Through the Reach Flight Center initiative, CAU partners with established flight schools across the country to deliver a unique hybrid pathway: students complete in-person flight training with their local Reach Flight Center while earning a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics online from CAU. This model combines the convenience of training close to home with the strength of a career- and aviation-focused university.

“We’re very excited to launch Reach Flight Centers,” said Matthew Johnston, President of California Aeronautical University. “This new training network expands opportunities for students to access FAA-approved training and aviation education, no matter where they live. We’re especially proud to partner with Air Fleet Training Systems, a highly respected flight school in the New York/New Jersey area, to establish the very first Reach Flight Center.”

Founded in 1991, Air Fleet Training Systems is based at Essex County Airport and has trained thousands of pilots. As an FAA Part 141 and Part 61 approved school, a Cessna Pilot Center, and an AOPA Distinguished Flight School, Air Fleet Training Systems is well-known for its long-standing reputation for excellence, safety, and student success.

“Through this collaboration, Air Fleet will expand access to high-quality flight training services for aspiring pilots in the region,” said Alexey Ozerov, owner of Air Fleet Training Systems. “This partnership underscores our commitment to supporting the next generation of aviators, while aligning with CAU’s mission to prepare future aviation professionals through innovative training and academic programs.”

As a CAU student enrolled through Reach Flight Centers, students gain access to:

  • University-level resources and support services
  • Federal financial aid to those who qualify
  • Structured, fast-track career pathways to commercial pilot careers
  • Direct pathways to both major and regional airlines, including United and SkyWest

The launch of Air Fleet Training Systems as the first Reach Flight Center marks the beginning of CAU’s plan to partner with flight schools nationwide, creating new career pathways for aspiring aviators and helping to meet the aviation industry’s critical workforce needs. Additional Reach Flight Center locations are already in the approval process, with announcements coming soon.

Graduates of CAU’s Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics program have been hired by Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Amazon cargo carriers, emergency medical services, and more.

ICAO Rejects IATA Proposal to Raise Pilot Retirement Age Beyond 65

Global – The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has rejected a proposal to raise the mandatory pilot retirement age from 65 to 67, following deliberations at its 42nd Assembly, held from September 23 to October 3, 2025.

  • The proposal was submitted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and supported by numerous airlines seeking relief from a regional specific global pilot shortage.

  • IATA’s position emphasized that extending the retirement age would enable operators to retain experienced pilots longer while mitigating training pipeline bottlenecks.

  • However, ICAO member states opposed the measure, citing concerns around aviation safety and age-related health risks, and ultimately voted to maintain the current age cap.

  • As a result, pilots aged 65 and above remain prohibited from operating international commercial flights, consistent with ICAO’s standing international standards.
