Latin America’s largest airline to take in 72 new aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus through 2028

LATAM Airlines Group announced its consolidated financial results for the fourth quarter ending December 31, 2021. One of the important highlights of the report is LATAM’s fleet plan.

According to LATAM, there have been agreements reached regarding its fleet commitments. 72 new aircraft, seventy (70) of which are Airbus A320-Neo family and the remaining two (2) Boeing B787-9 are all scheduled to be delivered starting 2022 through 2028.

Avianca confirms order for 88 new A320neo aircraft from Airbus

In line with its business plan that includes the operation of more than 200 mostly point-to-point routes and more than 130 aircraft by 2025, Avianca confirmed its commitment to order 88 new A320neo family aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus. The agreement also includes a purchase option for an additional 50 aircraft.

With the arrival of the 88 new A320neo aircraft, which will be gradually incorporated into the company’s passenger fleet between 2025 and 2031, Avianca is committed to continuing offering its customers the highest quality flights, while optimizing its operations thanks to the efficiency and productivity of this aircraft.

Rohit Philip, Avianca’s Chief Financial Officer, said: “This is great news for our company, our people and our customers, considering that the A320neo family is the most advanced single-aisle fleet in terms of efficiency, reliability and comfort.  This order highlights that we continue to make the required investments to grow our network in line with our business plan”.

“We are happy that Avianca has confirmed its preference for A320neo aircraft. The A320neo incorporates the latest technologies including new generation engines, Skarklets and aerodynamics, which together deliver 20 percent in fuel savings and CO2 reduction compared to previous generation Airbus aircraft. With the widest single-aisle cabin in its class, passengers aboard the A320 enjoy more personal space, wider seats, and generous overhead compartments to store their luggage”, said Arturo Barreira, Airbus President of Airbus Latin America and the Caribbean.

The A320neo fleet will have the new cabin configuration defined by Avianca for its A320 aircraft, offering its customers three types of seats: Premium, Plus and Economy. Currently, more than 90 A320 planes in Avianca’s fleet are being reconfigured and 26 of them already have the new Plus and Economy seats. As of May, customers will be able to enjoy the Premium offer and by the end of 2022 the entire fleet will be completely reconfigured. In addition, the use of up to 20% less fuel and the reduction of up to 900 tons of CO2 per year per aircraft will contribute to the sustainability of Avianca’s operations.

The 88 aircraft ordered by the company are in addition to the more than 110 that Avianca has in its passenger operation, the most complete in Colombia and one of the largest in Latin America with a network of 120 routes, more than 3,200 weekly flights and more than 500,000 seats per week connecting customers to more than 65 destinations in Colombia, Latin America and Europe.

DHL Express Places New Order for Six Additional 777 Freighters

DHL Express and Boeing, on March 08, announced that the world-leading express service provider has placed an order for six additional 777 Freighters. The purchase takes DHL Express’ order book total to 28 777 Freighters since it placed its first direct order in 2018 for today’s largest and most capable twin-engine freighter.

The new aircraft will significantly contribute to our aspiration to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to under 29 million tons by 2030.”

The 777 Freighter improves fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions by 17% compared to legacy airplanes. DHL Express has taken delivery of 15 777 Freighters to date.

The 777 Freighter is Boeing’s best-selling freighter of all time. Customers from around the world have ordered more than 300 777 Freighters since the program began in 2005.

Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines Sign Memorandum of Understanding for 5 New 777-8 Freighter

Boeing and its longstanding customer Ethiopian Airlines, on March 04, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the intent to purchase five 777-8 Freighters, the industry’s newest, most capable and most fuel-efficient twin-engine freighter.

The MoU to order the 777-8 Freighter will enable Ethiopian Airlines to meet expanding global cargo demand from its hub in Addis Ababa and position the carrier for long-term sustainable growth.

“Consistent with our history of aviation technology leadership in Africa, we are pleased to sign this MoU with our longstanding partner Boeing, which will make us join select group of launch customer airlines for the fleet. In our vision 2035, we are planning to expand our Cargo and Logistics business to be one of the largest global multimodal logistics provider in all continents. To this effect we are increasing our dedicated freighter fleet with the latest technology, fuel efficient and environment-friendly airplanes of the 21st century. We have also started the construction of the largest E-commerce Hub Terminal in Africa,” said Ethiopian Airlines’ Group CEO Tewolde Gebremariam. “The new 777-8 Freighters will be instrumental in this long journey of growth agenda. Boeing launched the new 777-8 Freighter in January and has already booked 34 firm orders for the model, which features the advanced technology from the new 777X family and proven performance of the market-leading 777 Freighter. With payload capacity nearly identical to the 747-400 Freighter and a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency, emissions and operating costs, the 777-8 Freighter will enable a more sustainable and profitable business for operators.

“Ethiopian Airlines has been at the forefront of Africa’s cargo market for decades, growing its fleet of Boeing freighters and connecting the continent to the flow of global commerce,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “The intent to purchase the new 777-8 Freighter further underscores the value of our latest airplane and ensures Ethiopian will remain a key player in global cargo, providing it with increased capacity, flexibility and efficiency for the future.”

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates nine 777 Freighters, connecting Africa with more than 40 cargo centers throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Americas. The carrier’s fleet also includes three 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters and a combined commercial fleet of more than 80 Boeing jets including 737s, 767s, 787s and 777s.

European Airline expands B737MAX Fleet by 10

AerCap Holdings N.V., on February 28, announced that it has signed agreements with Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA for the lease of ten new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft and eight Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft. The aircraft are scheduled to deliver in 2022 and 2023.

“We are delighted to support Norwegian’s narrowbody fleet renewal program,” said Peter Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer of AerCap. “The addition of these aircraft will help Norwegian grow their operations whilst maintaining its commitment to operate a highly competitive, fuel-efficient fleet of aircraft. The deal means Norwegian Air will have 80 aircraft in operation during next year’s high season, up from the current 51.

Spanish Airline to Add Nine Aircraft to its Fleet in the First Half of 2022

Thanks to Iberia’s gradual recovery in all its markets, the Spanish airline has revived fleet arrival plans, stalled by the pandemic. In the first half of this year, it will take delivery of nine new aircraft –three long-haul A350-900s, and six A320neo’s for medium- and short-haul routes.

According to Iberia’s chairman and CEO Javier Sánchez-Prieto, “The arrival of new aircraft is a clear sign of a recovery which we expect to be consolidated in the course of the year, and it will also enable us to offer a very ambitious summer program this year while increasing efficiency and contributing to the sustainability of our operations. The fleet expansion is the best possible news for our staff, which can use the encouragement after these two years of the pandemic.”

Of the 20 Airbus A350-900s ordered, Iberia had held up deliveries of eleven.

The first, registered as EC-NMZ and named “Hola, Madrid” was delivered on 23 February, and two more will join the fleet before the end of March, bringing the total to 12.

These aircraft are 30%-35% more fuel-efficient than those they replace, thanks to lighter materials used in airframe construction and to advanced Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.

The remaining eight Airbus A350-900s on order will be delivered gradually through 2024 and will feature a new configuration including Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins while giving Iberia passengers an improved travel experience.

In the course of 2022 Iberia expects to take delivery of a total of six Airbus A320neo, which will replace the planes retired due to low demand during the pandemic.

The first two of these joined the fleet in this month of February, and four more are due to arrive in the coming months.

These new A320neo’s are equipped with “Airspace” cabins, with more room and comfort for passengers, more ample storage space for hand luggage, “mood lighting”, and antibacterial surfaces in toilets, along with other innovations.

The six new units will bring Iberia’s A320neo fleet to a total of 14. They are regarded as the most technologically advanced and fuel-efficient of short- and medium-haul commercial aircraft. Powered by Leap-1A CFM engines, they are 50% quieter and 15% to 20% cleaner than their predecessors, emitting 5,000 tonnes less CO2 per year and 50% less NOx.

The remaining three units on order are to be delivered in 2023.

The first aircraft of the eight-unit A321XLR order IAG placed for Iberia in 2019, is also scheduled to arrive in late 2023. This new aircraft model will allow the airline to operate new transatlantic destinations and increase frequencies in key markets.

The flight was operated by Captain Randy Howe (Canada Jetlines’ Chief Pilot) and Captain Colin Forrest, both pilots having recently completed their Canada Jetlines’ A320 pilot training and simulator check ride monitored by Transport Canada.

Singapore Airlines interest to acquire 7 Airbus A350 Freighter Aircraft

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Airbus for seven A350F freighter aircraft. The agreement will see the A350F begin replacing the airline’s existing B747-400F fleet in the fourth quarter of 2025.

“We are honoured by Singapore Airlines’ vote of confidence in the A350F as it renews its freighter fleet. The A350F is the world’s all-new large freighter and will be unmatched in its market segment in terms of operational efficiency, lower fuel consumption and CO₂ savings,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International. “It is gratifying that Singapore Airlines recognises the value of the A350F as we build on the strong partnership we already enjoy.”

Earlier this year Airbus received Board of Directors approval for a freighter derivative of the A350 designed to meet the imminent wave of large freighter replacements and the evolving environmental requirements, shaping the future of airfreight. The A350F will be powered by latest technology, fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent-XWB97 engines.

As part of the world’s most modern long-range family, the A350F will have a high level of commonality with the A350 passenger versions. With a 109 tonne payload capability, the  A350F will serve all cargo markets. The aircraft features a large main deck cargo door, with its fuselage length and capacity optimised around the industry’s standard pallets and containers.

Over 70% of the airframe will be made of advanced materials, resulting in a 30 tonne lighter take-off weight and generating at least 20% lower fuel consumption and emissions over its current closest competitor. The A350F will fully meet ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards coming into effect in 2027.

Singapore Airlines is the world’s largest operator of the A350, with 56 aircraft currently in service across its network. The agreement with Singapore Airlines is the third commitment received for the new A350F over the past month.
