Emirates Places US$ 52 Billion Boeing Wide-body Aircraft Order at Dubai Airshow 2023

  • 55 additional Boeing 777-9s and 35 777-8s bring Emirates’ total 777X orders to 205 units.
  • Signs deal for 202 additional GE9X engines to power its new 777X fleet, bringing Emirates’ total order for GE9X engines to 460 units.
  • Emirates updates Boeing 787 Dreamliner order to 35 units: 15 787-10s and 20 787-8s

Emirates opened the Dubai Airshow 2023 with a significant order for 95 additional wide-body aircraft, taking its total order book to 295 aircraft.

Already the world’s biggest operator of wide-body passenger aircraft, Emirates has committed to additional Boeing 777-9s, 777-8s, and 787s, worth US$ 52 billion, to power its growth plans, maintain a modern efficient fleet, and deliver the best flying experience to its customers.

In the presence of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and Deputy Ruler of Dubai and HH Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council; the orders were signed by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates airline and Group; with Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes; and Larry Culp, Chairman and CEO for GE, and CEO of GE Aerospace.

HH Sheikh Ahmedsaid: “From day 1, Emirates’ business model has been to operate modern and efficient wide-body aircraft capable of carrying large numbers of travellers comfortably and safely, over long distances to and via Dubai. Today’s aircraft orders reflect that strategy.

“These additional aircraft will enable Emirates to connect even more cities, supporting the Dubai economic agenda D33 set out by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to add 400 cities to Dubai’s foreign trade map over the next decade. By the early 2030s, we expect the Emirates fleet to be around 350-strong, connecting Dubai to even more cities around the world.”

Emirates’ Boeing order

Emirates, already the world’s largest operator of Boeing 777 aircraft, has signed firm orders for 55 additional 777-9s and 35 777-8s. This takes the airline’s 777-X order book to a total of 205 units.

Emirates also confirmed an order of 202 GE9X engines to power the additional 777X aircraft ordered today, taking its total GE9X engine order to 460 units.

From its previous order of 115 units, the first 777-9 is expected to join Emirates’ fleet in 2025. Today’s additional orders mean Emirates will induct new 777-9s to its fleet until 2035.

With this latest order, Emirates is also set to be one of the launch customers of the 777-8 passenger variant, with first deliveries expected in 2030.

HH Sheikh Ahmed said: “Emirates is the biggest operator of Boeing 777 aircraft, and today’s order cements that position. We’ve been closely involved in the 777 program since its start up until this latest generation of 777X aircraft. The 777 has been central to Emirates’ fleet and network strategy of connecting cities on all continents non-stop to Dubai. We are pleased to extend our relationship with Boeing and look forward to the first 777-9 joining our fleet in 2025.”

The 777 remains the backbone of Emirates’ operations, capable of missions of up to 18 hours that enable the airline to connect Dubai non-stop to cities on six continents. The new 777-9s and 777-8s will replace Emirates’ retiring 777 aircraft, and provision for the airline’s future growth plans.

Emirates has also updated its previous order of 30 Boeing 787-9s, increasing its commitment to a total of 35 Dreamliners comprising: 15 Boeing 787-10s, and 20 Boeing 787-8s.

UAE Based Airline, flydubai, Places Orders for 30 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Its First Widebody Airplanes

Boeing and flydubai announced an agreement to purchase 30 787-9 Dreamliners as the airline diversifies its fleet with the introduction of widebody jets. In a signing ceremony at the Dubai Airshow, the Dubai-based carrier said it plans to use the efficient 787 to open new routes and grow capacity on existing routes.

“In 2008 when we placed our first-ever order for 50 Boeing 737 aircraft, we were confident of the vital role flydubai would play in supporting Dubai‘s aviation hub,” said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai. “I am proud today to see flydubai evolve further, surpassing labels and challenging the traditional conventions around travel. Today’s order reaffirms flydubai’s commitment to enabling more people to travel across its expanding network. The highly fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner will allow flydubai to expand its horizon and cater to the growing demand on existing routes.”

The 787-9 can fly 296 passengers 14,010 km (7,565 nautical miles) in addition to more cargo. Since revenue service began in 2011, the 787 family has launched more than 380 new nonstop routes around the world. Half of all 787 Dreamliner flights are operated in short- and medium-haul markets below 5,000 km (2,700 nautical miles), demonstrating its versatility and efficiency across all network segments.

flydubai currently operates an all-737 fleet of 79 airplanes. The airline has an order backlog of 137 737s.

According to Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook, the Middle East airplane fleet is projected to more than double over the next 20 years. Nearly half of these deliveries will be widebody airplanes, driven by the region’s growing position as an international air transit hub.

Middle East Airline Fleet to More Than Double by 2042, Says Boeing

Boeing forecasts widebody airplanes will comprise 45% of deliveries to Middle East airlines over the next 20 years ─ the highest percentage of the 10 global regions featured in Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) forecast. The region’s fleet of dedicated freighters is projected to more than double to 180 jets by 2042, according to the CMO, Boeing’s annual long-term forecast of demand for commercial airplanes and services.

“Airlines in the Middle East have increasingly expanded their influence and reach, transforming the region into an international air transit hub,” said Darren Hulst, Boeing vice president, Commercial Marketing. “Air travel and cargo demand continue to gain momentum, driven by significant economic growth and national development plans. As airlines in the region will require efficient and versatile fleet solutions, Boeing products will be ready to meet market demands.”

The CMO projects delivery of 3,025 new commercial airplanes in the Middle East by 2042, including 1,350 widebodies. Many airlines in the region provide service between major population centers in Asia, Africa and Europe via growing hubs that offer efficient connectivity. As a result, a higher proportion of widebody aircraft are needed to carry larger passenger volumes.

The Middle East single-aisle fleet is also expected to more than double as low-cost carriers (LCC) and short-haul networks continue to develop and expand. By 2042, nearly half of the region’s aircraft will be single-aisle jets.

Additional 2023 CMO highlights for the Middle East through 2042 include:

  • Two-thirds of new deliveries will support air traffic and cargo growth while one-third of deliveries will replace older airplanes with more fuel-efficient models
  • The total fleet will increase 2.4 times to 3,360 airplanes — 1,610 (48%) will be single aisles, while 1,520 (45%) will be widebodies
  • The commercial fleet will generate demand for $335 billion in aviation services including maintenance, repair, training and spare parts

Boeing: Southeast Asia Fleet Will Nearly Quadruple Over The Next 20 Years

Boeing says Southeast Asia’s commercial airplane fleet will nearly quadruple to more than 4,000 jets by 2042, becoming one of the global leaders in air traffic and fleet growth. As low-cost carriers (LCCs) become the dominant business model and expand networks across the vast region, Southeast Asia will be the world’s fastest-growing single-aisle airplane market through the 20-year forecast period.

These projections are included in Boeing’s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO), the company’s annual long-term forecast of demand for commercial airplanes and related services.

“As the Southeast Asia market reopens, air traffic will grow substantially,” said Dave Schulte, Boeing Commercial Marketing managing director for Asia-Pacific. “Expanded connectivity, tourism and low fares will continue to stoke new and increased travel, especially among a growing middle class across the region. The role of LCCs will continue to rise to fill that demand for air travel.”

LCCs in Southeast Asia will add more than 2,000 new single aisle jets over the next 20 years, nearly two-thirds of overall projected 3,390 single-aisle deliveries in the region. LCCs will transport 56% of passenger traffic in 2042, compared to 22% in 2012.

The 2023 Southeast Asia CMO also includes these projections by 2042:

  • 83% of deliveries to the region will support fleet growth, while 17% will replace older airplanes with more fuel-efficient models
  • The widebody fleet will see a three-fold increase, with demand for nearly 800 airplanes including passenger jets such as Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, 777X and freighter models
  • Fleet growth will drive demand for $310 billion in aviation services including maintenance, repair, training and spare parts

Boeing Commercial Airplanes

  • From November 13-15, Boeing’s widebody 777-9 flight-test airplane will perform in the flying display and be on static display. The world’s largest and most efficient twin-engine jet, the 777-9 is based on the industry’s most successful twin-aisle family – the 777 – with advanced technologies from the 787 Dreamliner. The jet can seat 426 passengers with a range of 13,510 km (7,295 nautical miles).
  • Customer displays will include 787-9 Dreamliners from Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways, an Emirates Airlines 777-300ER (Extended Range), a SAUDIA 787-10 Dreamliner and an Air India Express 737 MAX.
  • Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s newest carrier, will display a Boeing-owned 787-9 in its new indigo livery, inspired by the colors of the sky at dusk.
  • On Nov. 14, Darren Hulst, vice president of Commercial Marketing, will present the 2023 Middle East Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) and a product overview. The Boeing CMO is the industry’s most comprehensive market analysis.

  • The superior capability of Boeing’s Advanced F-15QA fighter jet will be on display as the aircraft performs in aerial demonstrations.

  • On Nov. 13, Sheila Remes, vice president of Environmental Sustainability, will join a panel at the Aerospace 2050 forum to discuss Boeing and industry efforts to decarbonize aviation.
  • On Nov. 14, Brian Moran, vice president of Global Sustainability Policy & Partnerships, and Jim Hileman, chief engineer and vice president of Sustainability & Future Mobility, will discuss Boeing’s Cascade Climate Impact Model, a data-modeling tool that provides actionable insights towards decarbonization.

Innovation and Technology

  • Boeing-led Aerospace Xelerated is a strategic partner of the Vista 2023 startup hub at Dubai Airshow and plays a key role in mentoring emerging aerospace technology companies. Aerospace Xelerated will highlight its 10 portfolio companies supported by the UAE’s Tawazun Council.
  • Also exhibiting at Dubai Airshow is Boeing’s Applied Innovation team, which is dedicated to bringing startup innovation and technology of startups into Boeing products and services, and seven portfolio companies.
