Airbus Delivers 437 Commercial Aircraft in the First 9 Months of 2022

Airbus, in its Nine-Month (9m) 2022 results, indicates 437 commercial aircraft deliveries and net order of 647 commercial aircraft.

An excerpt from the report states:

“Airbus delivered a solid nine-month 2022 financial performance in a complex operating environment,” said Guillaume Faury, Airbus Chief Executive Officer. “The supply chain remains fragile resulting from the cumulative impact of COVID, the war in Ukraine, energy supply issues and constrained labour markets. Our strong focus on cash flow and the favourable dollar/euro environment have enabled us to raise our free cash flow guidance for 2022. The commercial aircraft delivery and earnings targets are maintained. Our teams are focused on our key priorities and in particular, delivering the commercial aircraft ramp-up over the coming months and years.”

“Gross commercial aircraft orders increased to 856 (9m 2021: 270 aircraft) with net orders of 647 aircraft after cancellations (9m 2021: 133 aircraft). The order backlog amounted to 7,294 commercial aircraft at the end of September 2022.

On the A320 Family programme, production is progressing towards a monthly rate of 65 aircraft in early 2024 and 75 in 2025. The groundwork continues throughout all sites to secure rate 75 and adapt to the higher proportion of A321s in the backlog, ensuring all A320 Family Final Assembly Lines become A321 capable. Preparation for the upgrade of the second A320 FAL in Toulouse is underway. All three test A321XLRs have now flown, with the aircraft’s entry-into-service expected to take place in Q2 2024. On widebody aircraft, the Company is exploring, together with its supply chain, the feasibility of further rate increases to meet growing market demand as international air travel recovers.”

Middle East Airline, Saudia, Signs MoU for the Purchase of 100 Lilium, eVTOL, Jets

SAUDIA, the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, and Lilium N.V., developer of the first all-electric vertical take-off and landing (“eVTOL”) jet, at the sixth edition of the Future Investment Initiative (FII), announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the proposed development and operation by SAUDIA of an eVTOL network across Saudi Arabia. The proposed arrangement will make SAUDIA the first airline in the MENA region to purchase 100 Lilium Jets alongside yearly support services.

With zero operating emissions, the Lilium Jet will enable sustainable and time-saving travel. SAUDIA intends to launch a state-of-the-art service with the purchase of 100 Lilium Jets including new electric point-to-point connections as well as seamless feeder connections to SAUDIA’s hubs for business class guests. Lilium Jet’s flexible cabin architecture is expected to enable a range of spacious interior configurations that are well suited to the needs of the premium market, which Lilium believes can help drive the early adoption of eVTOL aircraft required to scale.

SAUDIA also expects to support Lilium with the necessary regulatory approval processes in Saudi Arabia for certification of the Lilium Jet and any other required regulatory approvals. As the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, SAUDIA currently serves a network of more than 100 domestic and international destinations with its world-renowned service and hospitality. Lilium and SAUDIA plan to combine SAUDIA’s unrivalled market knowledge and Lilium’s unique eVTOL aircraft to transform the Kingdom’s domestic air transport sector.

Captain Ibrahim S. Koshy, Chief Executive Officer of SAUDIA said: “SAUDIA, building on its commitment to be an industry leading airline committed to sustainability, consider our eVTOL network project with Lilium to be an undertaking of great significance for the Kingdom’s aviation industry and will contribute effectively to spurring sustainable tourism in Saudi using zero-emission aviation. SAUDIA intends to meet a growing demand for regional air mobility and offer our valued Guests a superior on-board experience. The potential for such an airborne transit network is limitless”.

Alexander Asseily, Vice Chairman of Lilium said: “We are thrilled to work with innovative partners for whom sustainability is a priority. This partnership with SAUDIA, our first in the Middle East, is an exciting development for Lilium. We look forward to working with SAUDIA to deploy an eVTOL network across Saudi Arabia.”

The proposed arrangement between SAUDIA and Lilium is subject to the parties completing a feasibility assessment, agreeing to commercial terms, and entering into definitive agreements with respect thereto and satisfaction of certain conditions.

Boeing Forecast: Latin America and Caribbean Fleet to Nearly Double Over Next 20 Years

  • Demand for 2,240 new airplanes; single-aisle airplanes comprise over 90% of demand through 2041
  • Region outpacing global air traffic recovery
  • 20-year demand for commercial aviation services valued at $165 billion
  • Latin America’s geography and demographics are key factors in industry growth

With Latin American air travel outpacing the industry’s global recovery, the region’s commercial fleet is projected to grow by more than 85% over the next 20 years, fueled by the strength of domestic and intra-regional travel, Boeing said. The region is well-positioned for healthy recovery beyond near-term market disruptions.

According to Boeing’s 2022 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO), the Latin American and Caribbean region will need 2,240 new airplanes by 2041. The CMO, an annual projection for commercial airplanes and services, forecasts that more than 2,000 single-aisle deliveries will more than double the current fleet to serve popular leisure routes between North America, Mexico and the Caribbean, while also expanding intra-regional networks. As the fleet grows, demand for commercial aviation services will grow as well, reaching $165 billion in value over the forecast period.

“Latin America has seen a strong recovery in air travel, particularly in domestic markets, with airlines in the region successfully leveraging single-aisle fleets for short-haul flights and expanding global networks.” said David Franson, Boeing regional director of Market Forecasting. “Airlines will continue to navigate Latin America’s challenges to make air transportation more available and attractive to travelers in the region.”

More than half of new airplane deliveries will accommodate growth in commercial aviation across the continent, with the remaining orders replacing older airplanes with more fuel-efficient models such as the 737 MAX, 787 Dreamliner and 777X, according to Boeing. I     n the past decade, Latin American carriers have opened more than 200 city pairs across the region, a foundation for future single-aisle demand that will account for over 90% of deliveries.

Fleet renewal is a key component of Boeing’s strategy to decarbonize aerospace. New airplanes provide significant efficiency gains — each generation reduces fuel use and emissions 15-25%.

The 2022 Latin America CMO also includes these projections through 2041:

  • Passenger traffic in the region is expected to grow at 4.4% annually.
  • Latin America’s freighter fleet predicted to grow by nearly 50% to 160 airplanes, aligned with global trends for long-term air cargo demand.
  • The region’s carriers will see demand for 118,000 new aviation personnel, including 35,000 pilots, 35,000 technicians and 48,000 cabin crew members in the next two decades, according to Boeing’s 2022 Pilot and Technician Outlook.

As a leading global aerospace company, Boeing develops, manufactures and services commercial airplanes, defense products and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries. As a top U.S. exporter, the company leverages the talents of a global supplier base to advance economic opportunity, sustainability and community impact. Boeing’s diverse team is committed to innovating for the future, leading with sustainability, and cultivating a culture based on the company’s core values of safety, quality and integrity.
