California Aeronautical University Partners with Delta Air Lines to Provide Graduates Accelerated Path to Airline via Delta Propel Program

California Aeronautical University (CAU) is proud to announce its partnership with Delta Air Lines which provides CAU graduates a direct and accelerated pathway to the Delta Air Lines flight deck.

As Delta’s first partner school on the west coast, eligible graduates can qualify for the Delta Propel Collegiate Career Path program where they can become a Delta pilot in just 42 months or less.

A new program for collegiate aviation students, Delta Propel Collegiate Career Path was developed to aid the company’s pipeline amid the global pilot shortage. Only students and recently graduated flight instructors at partner schools like CAU are eligible to apply for the program.

Upon acceptance and completion of program requirements, Delta will provide participants with a qualified job offer detailing a defined path and an accelerated timeline to become a Delta pilot – faster and more seamlessly than ever before.

Plus, Delta will be engaged with participants throughout the duration of the Delta Propel program, including access to regularly scheduled events to strengthen knowledge of the airline industry and develop leadership skills. A personal Delta pilot mentor will also be assigned to each participant to further ease the transition from student pilot to Delta pilot.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with one of the top airlines in the United States,” says Matthew Johnston, CAU President. “Here at CAU, we’re always striving to better prepare our students to reach their career aspirations. This partnership with Delta Air Lines opens up even more opportunities for them to get to a major airline, in a much quicker timeline than other routes. Plus, this partnership provides Delta with qualified candidates for their pilot pipeline. We know it will be mutually beneficial all around.”

Strong and growing relationships between the University and important aviation organizations are critical to the success of CAU graduates entering the field. CAU currently partners with several regional airlines around the country and Delta will be the University’s first major airline partner.

“We are proud to partner with CAU and its wonderful people to help identify and train the next generation of Delta pilots who will help us better connect the world for our customers,” said Patrick Burns, Delta’s V.P. – Flight Operations and System Chief Pilot.

CAU and Delta will celebrate the partnership at a launch event at the University’s Bakersfield campus on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. During the event, Delta representatives will share details of Delta Propel with students and offer networking opportunities during a lunch mixer.

About Delta Air Lines

Delta’s Propel Pilot Career Path program launched in 2018 to identify, select and develop the next generation of pilots. This industry-leading program complements the traditional, existing paths to becoming a Delta pilot and now has four main areas of focus — College, Company, Community, and the brand-new Propel Flight Academy. This comprehensive approach will help Delta support future aviators as well as current Delta employees who have a passion for aviation and a strong interest in becoming a Delta pilot. The Propel program was the first in the U.S. to offer students their choice of three unique career routes and an accelerated timeline to progress to Delta, in 42 months or less, after flying for one of the Delta Connection carriers; Wheels Up; or flying military aircraft for the Air National Guard or Reserves. US Senators Proposes to Increase Mandatory Commercial Pilot Retirement Age to 67 from 65

Seven U.S. Senators proposed a bill increasing the mandatory retirement age for commercial pilots age to 67 from 65. It aims to address the ongoing national pilot shortage that has led to recent spikes in flight cancellations, delays and service disruptions across the country.

The bill is known as the “Let Experienced Pilots Fly Act” which gained bipartisan support.

“Our country continues to face a severe pilot shortage that has led to recent spikes in flight cancellations and delays, disrupting travel plans for millions of Americans,” said Senator Manchin who introduced the Bill. “In West Virginia, our airports are our gateways to the rest of the world, and unfortunately, we have lost a number of flights over the last year due to these shortages. I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan legislation to raise the mandatory retirement age for commercial pilots from 65 to 67, while maintaining the current requirements for first-class medical and training certifications. This commonsense reform will help ensure air service is safe, reliable and efficient while addressing the pilot shortage.”

British Airways Cityflyer Abinitio MPL Cadet Pilots Commence Training at European Flight School Partner

This month, British Airways Cityflyer cadets have commenced training at Spanish Flight School FTEJerez as part of Course 236. These MPL cadets were selected after completing a rigorous assessment process that commenced in November 2022 with the written tests and group exercises that FTEJerez conducted at BA’s headquarters in London. The highest performers at this stage were then invited in the new year to attend a personal interview with the airline at their London City Airport facilities as the final stage of this demanding selection process.

“This new intake of integrated ab initio students is a clear example of how things have returned to normality after a challenging period for the industry. At FTEJerez, we are proud of training cadets for some of the best airlines in the world and we are honoured to see that our longstanding airline partners continue to select FTEJerez and return to entrust us with the training of their future captains,” said Oscar Sordo, FTEJerez CEO.

The commencement of this new course coincides with successful completion of training of the previous group of British Airways Cityflyer MPL cadets. These students were forced to pause their training during the pandemic but returned to FTEJerez in 2022 to resume the course. Now, graduates Lewis Copeland, Brandon Harvey, Michael Mosley, Charlie Waters, Jason Williams and Leo Zhao, will be commencing their line training with British Airways Cityflyer in May, after having successfully completed their Type Ratings (MPL Phase 4) on the Embraer.

“We are particularly proud of this group of British Airways Cityflyer cadets due to their resilience and hard work as they were forced to pause their training during the pandemic. It was great to welcome them back on campus last year to complete their training and we are delighted to see them finally join British Airways Cityflyer as First Officers,” added Oscar Sordo.

European Airline Owned Flight Training Academy Improves Pilot Training Program Offer including “Take-off-Promise”

Lufthansa Aviation Training GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Group and operator of the European Flight Academy flight school (EFA) now offers a special value proposition with its “Take-off-Promise.” Student pilots at EFA will receive an offer for a cockpit contract by a Lufthansa Group airline at the latest 24 months after completion of their training. Should an offer not be possible, 50% of the training costs will be reimbursed. This commitment is included in the contracts in a binding manner and with immediate effect and also applies to the courses that have already started their training after the new start of the flight school last year.

Matthias Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa Aviation Training GmbH: “We are so convinced of the good prospects that the pilot training at the European Flight Academy provides that we bring our “Take-off-Promise” to market. Not only does it provide our student pilots with fair and predictable prospects for an appealing job in the cockpit, but it simultaneously also provides investment security for the training costs. The impressive numbers of participants and the feedback we received at trade shows and our informational events show us that the job of a pilot has not lost any of its fascination and instead continues to be a dream career goal for many young people.”

Training schedule

The training at the European Flight Academy is approximately 24 months long, and while its theoretical part takes place in Bremen/DE or Zurich/CH, the practical training is set to take place at locations in Goodyear/USA, Grenchen/CH, and Rostock-Laage, respectively. In order to guarantee the highest standards in quality and safety, a modern and standardized training fleet consisting of aircraft by the manufacturer Diamond is used for the practical training in Europe. In the USA, a modern fleet of the Cirrus SR20 aircraft will be flown.

Expansion of included services

From now on, the training costs will include a comprehensive package of services. The costs now cover air travel and transfer to the USA as well as the accommodation during the practical training in Goodyear, Arizona. The training costs for the training in Germany are adjusted from EUR 105,000 to EUR 110,000, and for Switzerland they are adjusted from CHF 135,000 to CHF 140,000. The training is set up as a self-pay model, as is internationally customary. The costs will be invoiced step by step in line with the training progress.

Financing

In addition to purely private financing, third-party financing partners will also be available for the training at the European Flight Academy – so that the dream job does not have to remain a dream. Among other things, these partners offer an innovative model of what is called an income-share agreement via an education fund. This means that former student pilots pay back a fixed percentage of their income once they have taken up employment. The specific, individual repayment amount is contingent upon the income level – the higher the salary, the higher the repayment amount will be, and vice versa (principle of solidarity).

Additionally, third-party partners will also offer traditional financing for the pilot training at attractive terms.
