New US$30 Billion Airline Saudi Airline ‘RIA’ Speculated to Launch in Q4
Middle East Media publication Arabian Business shared information about information it is said to have received on Saudi Arabia’s planned new airline;
- International Airline likely to be branded as “RIA” and be based out or Riyadh
- Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund – ‘Public Investment Fund’ (PIF)
- Part of Saudi’s Vision 2030 $100 billion investment in the aviation sector economic blueprint
- Saudi Arabia is targeting 30 million international transit passengers by 2030, compared to under four million currently. Sources suggest this will mean the new carrier will eventually need to operate over 150 routes globally, across Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia, which necessitates $30 billion investment.
- “We are talking about a brand-new airline that aims to do what Emirates did in a quarter of the timescale. It’s unprecedented in the history of aviation. It’s also why they have yet to appoint a CEO – whoever takes this job will have to deliver the most ambitious targets you can imagine,” the source said.

US Regional Airline Pilots to Increase Entry-Level First Officer Pay by 118%
The pilots of US Regional Airline – Mesa Airlines, on August 26, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), secured industry-leading pay rates with Letter of Agreement (LOA).
“With strong competition in the regional industry, today’s LOA offers the compensation Mesa needs to remain competitive and attract and retain experienced, qualified pilots,” said Capt. Chris Gill, Mesa ALPA Master Executive Council chair. “We’re happy to see management and our partners recognize the value of Mesa pilots.”
Mesa pilots are still engaged in Section 6 negotiations under the Railway Labor Act to address other areas of the contract, but this week’s agreement reflects an overall hourly rate pay increase of nearly 118 percent for first-year captains and 172 percent for new-hire first officers.
The following pay rates will go into effect September 15, 2022:
- CRJ 900/E175 first-year captain pay starting at $150/hour
- CRJ 900/E175 first-year first officer pay starting at $100/hour
- CRJ 900/E175 20-year captain pay at $215/hour
- CRJ 900/E175 5-year to 10-year first officer pay at $110
- 1% pay increase in 2023 and 2024
LPA has long advocated for permanent changes to salaries and work rules, warning that without these changes, pilots would continue to leave for airlines that offer better pay, working conditions, and career opportunities. Regional airlines that have taken positive steps to improve pilot contracts have been able to attract highly qualified candidates.
Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents more than 66,000 pilots at 41 U.S. and Canadian airlines.

American Regional Airline Announces Conditional Employment Without Interview To Distressed Airline Pilots
US regional airline – Piedmont Airlines announced that it will provide employment relief to seniority list pilots at now-defunct ExpressJet Airlines under Piedmont’s “distressed carrier” provision in its ALPA-negotiated pilot contract. The language, added to Piedmont’s pilot contract in 2021, allows the company to offer pilots at carriers deemed “distressed” a safe haven for employment, including longevity-based pay and bonuses. This is the first time Piedmont has addressed a distressed carrier since adding the contract language. Express Jet, based in Georgia, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and shut down operations for the second time in two years.
“Piedmont added distressed carrier language to its pilot contract last year before anticipating the fragility of some regional carriers after the pandemic,” said Matt Kernan, Piedmont’s Director of Operations. “No one wants to see an airline fail, ever. We know that ExpressJet pilots are well-trained aviators who know the Embraer 145, and we are very pleased to make this transition as easy as possible for them.”
ExpressJet pilots can reach out to Piedmont to begin the transition process. All of Piedmont’s current new hire bonuses, pay and credits will apply to the transitioning ExpressJet pilots.
Piedmont recently announced the addition of 15 Embraer 145 aircraft to the fleet starting in October. “This is an opportunity to get these pilots significant pay and bonus increases, expedited job offers and in the process, help Piedmont grow its fleet,” said Kernan. “A pilot with five years’ experience can start at over $160 an hour.”
Details of the provision include:
- Contractual flow to American Airlines
- Expedited job offers
- Positive space travel to Piedmont’s training center to complete or resolve any outstanding paperwork or background issues
- Preferential training date
- Assigned transition coordinator to expedite the hiring process
- Longevity based pay and bonuses
- $10,000 bonus for High-Time First Officers with 600 hours
- $15,000 sign on bonus
- $15,000 for Direct Entry Captains
- $7,500 E145 type rating bonus
- $15,000 after 12 months of active service
- $30,000 Captain upgrade bonus
- $40,000 Captain upgrade + 1 year bonus
- $40,000 Captain upgrade + 2 year bonus
- $25,000 flow to American bonus
